RIC SHOCKS MONTCLAIR, 3-2
Anchormen Upset the
Ninth-Ranked Team in the Nation With Two Second Half Goals
|
|
Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College defeated Montclair State, 3-2, snapping the Red Hawks
11-game winning streak and handing them their first loss of the season
on Thursday afternoon. The Anchormen, who had lost four of their last
five games, scored three unanswered goals after falling behind, 1-0,
to eventually win. The Red Hawks were ranked ninth in the nation in
the latest edition of the National Soccer Coaches Association of
America (NSCAA) Division III Poll. |

Things
looked bleak right off the bat as Montclair State senior forward
Ilyas Tasci (Paramus, NJ) flicked in a junior midfielder Owen
Nichols’ (Princeton, NJ) corner kick in just the third minute.
Rhode Island College junior midfielder Nic Rossi (North Kingstown,
RI), who snuck in from the backside, headed in a junior defender
Jameson Gonzalez (Johnston, RI) crossing pass in the 15th
minute to even the contest. |
|
|
|
The game
went back and forth until the 65th minute when Rhode Island
College junior midfielder Julian Montoya (North
Providence,
RI)
headed in a brilliant long range throw-in from senior forward Chris
Childs (Cranston,
RI)
to put the Anchormen on top. In the 73rd minute, with
Montoya on the field behind the play, junior forward Jimmy
Hernandez (Providence, RI) was taken down in the box and was
awarded a penalty kick. Hernandez buried the shot to give the
Anchormen a two-goal lead. |

|
The Red
Hawks picked up the intensity as sophomore forward Tyler Masterson
(Long Valley, NJ) scored after a scramble in the box in the 85th
minute. Montclair State would not back down as Rhode Island College
junior goalkeeper Jadon Neves (Warren, RI) was forced to tip a
long range shot over the crossbar from sophomore defender Leroy
Seqeira (Newark, NJ) as time expired. |
|
|
|
Neves ups
his record to 3-3 on the season with a season-high nine-save effort.
Montclair State sophomore goalkeeper Nick Mele (Delran, NJ)
suffers his first loss of the season (7-1), making five stops. |
