RIC’S NINE-GAME WIN STREAK ENDS WITH,
2-0, LOSS
Corchard & Gomes Score to Lead Colonials Past Anchorwomen

CT—Rhode
Island College saw its school record nine-game winning streak come to
and end in a 2-0 loss to Little East Conference rival Western
Connecticut in collegiate women’s soccer action. The Colonials stay
unbeaten with a 13-0 overall record and a 4-0 mark in the LEC. RIC,
which hadn’t lost since Sept. 8, falls to 11-2 overall and 3-1 in the
LEC. Both losses for the Anchorwomen this season have been, 2-0,
shutouts. |

Western
Connecticut State University sophomore midfielder Amy Corchard
(Monroe, CT) and senior midfielder Jessica Gomes (Wallingford,
CT) scored the goals for the Colonials. |
|
|
|
Corchard
headed home her third goal of the season following a perfect corner
kick by senior midfielder Calie Carter (Lebanon, NH) to give
the Colonials a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute. |
|
|
|
Gomes added
an insurance goal, her sixth marker of the season, with 15 minutes to
play when she converted on a penalty kick. The free shot was awarded
when Anchorwomen defense pulled freshman midfielder Jessica
Sperlazza (Wallingford, CT) to the ground inside the box. |

|
|
Although
the scoreboard indicated a close contest throughout, the Colonials
outshot Rhode Island College, 30-5 on the night, including three
attempts that hit the crossbar in the first half. |
|
|
|
Colonials’s
senior goalkeeper Jenna Cappellieri (Stratford, CT) earned her
third shutout of the season after making four saves. RIC sophomore
goalkeeper Krissie Pyzynski (Bristol, CT) made 12 stops in a
losing effort. |
|
|
|
In upcoming
action, RIC will host Bridgewater State on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 6
p.m. |
