WITH OT GOAL

Providence, RI—Junior
back Kristin Pellegrinelli (Hopewell Jct., NY) came off the
bench and netted the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute
to lift Westfield State College to a 3-2 double overtime victory over
Rhode Island College. The Owls improve to 7-7-1 overall, while the
Anchorwomen fall to 12-4. The Anchorwomen have lost three of their
last four games. |

Despite
dodging an early Owls attack, the Anchorwomen were in control for most
of the first half. Junior midfielder Abby Hummel (North Kingstown,
RI) scored twice in less than two minutes to give RIC a 2-0
advantage. Hummel scored off a junior midfielder Krista MacKinnon
(Exeter, RI) free kick in the 21st minute, then headed
in a MacKinnon corner kick in the 23rd minute. |

Freshman
midfielder Megan Gearin (Groton, MA), Westfield State’s leading
scorer, converted a freshman back Ashley Szczebak (Feeding Hills,
MA) pass into a goal after a scramble in the box, which cut the
deficit to one goal at the half. |

|
The Owls
put a lot of pressure on the Anchorwomen for much of the second half
and it paid off when sophomore forward Jenn Pagnoni (Holyoke, MA)
took a pass from senior forward Erin Lowney (Westport, MA) and
shot the ball into an open net after a RIC defensive miscue. |
|
|
|
RIC senior
forward Erika Haaland (North Dartmouth, MA) and WSC senior back
Emily Johnson (East Longmeadow, MA) were both issued red cards
and ejected in the 88th minute, forcing both clubs to play
with only ten players the remainder of the game. |

|
The Owls
and Anchorwomen played a scoreless first overtime period and for the
initial two minutes of the second extra session. Westfield State
senior forward Kate McMillan (Belchertown, MA) broke down the
wing and Rhode Island College freshman goalkeeper Kendra DeGiulio
(Warwick, RI) came out of the net to try and break up the play.
McMillan calmly crossed the ball to Pellegrinelli who was trailing the
play and buried the shot into the open net. |
|
|
|
DeGiulio
made nine saves in a losing effort as her record falls to 1-1.
Westfield State senior goalkeeper Natalia Araszkiewicz (Framingham,
MA) made six saves as her record improves to 7-6-1. |
