RIC Women’s Tennis Comes Up Short
at Little East Championships
Plymouth State Finished One Point
Ahead

Providence, RI—For
the second time in the past three seasons, Rhode Island College
finished second to Plymouth State at the Little East Conference
Women’s Tennis Championships. The Panthers won the title with 17.0
points, while the Anchorwomen totaled 16.0. UMass Dartmouth hosted the
tourney on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 21-22. In other action, Salem
State was third (15.5), Bridgewater State was fourth (12.5), Western
Connecticut was fifth (9.0), UMass Dartmouth was sixth (1.5), UMass
Boston was seventh (1.5) and Southern Maine was eighth (0.0).

The Panthers receive an automatic bid to the 2006-07 NCAA Div. III
Women’s Tennis Championships. 2006-07 marks the first time the LEC
Championship winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA
Championships. |

The Anchorwomen
captured two doubles flight championships and one singles flight
championship. |
|
|
|
Freshman Julie Bannon (Narragansett, RI) was the Little East
Conference Champion at number six singles and at number three doubles.
In singles action, she defeated Bing Nguy from UMass Boston
(8-0) in opening round action, downed Paula Araujo from
Bridgewater State (6-1, 7-5) in the semifinals and captured the flight
championship over Briley Boisvert from Plymouth State (2-6,
6-0, 6-2), despite losing the first set. |

Bannon teamed with junior Kseniya Gurvich (Barrington, RI) to
win at number two doubles. They defeated Katie Hunt/Heidi Graceffa
from Southern Maine (8-2) in the opening round, downed Krista Golia/Ashley
Ludwig from Western Connecticut (6-2, 6-1) in the semifinals and
captured the flight championship over Kiley Boyd/Briley Boisvert
(6-1, 6-4) in the finals. |

Bannon is currently undefeated with a 17-0 mark at number six singles
and is 17-2 at number three doubles for 25.5 points on the season. She
has broken the school record for doubles victories and points in a
season and is tied for the single season wins record. She has been
named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week four times on the
season. She will have a chance to increase her totals when, for the
first time in school history, the Anchorwomen will see action in the
spring. |

Junior Kseniya Gurvich (Barrington, RI) was the Little East
Conference Champion at number three doubles. Gurvich teamed with
Bannon to defeat Katie Hunt/Heidi Graceffa from Southern Maine
(8-2) in the opening round, then beat Krista Golia/Ashley Ludwig
from Western Connecticut (6-2, 6-1) in the semifinals and captured the
flight championship with a win over Kiley Boyd/Briley Boisvert
(6-1, 6-4) in the finals. |

Gurvich is currently 11-4 at number four singles and 15-2 at number
three doubles for 18.5 points on the season. |

Sophomore Meg Funk (Oakdale, CT) was the Little East Conference
Champion at number one doubles. She teamed with junior Sasha Doonan
(Pawtucket, RI) to defeat Sara Wiley/Ashley Kirkpatrick
from Southern Maine (8-0) in the opening round, then downed Jill
Deyermond/Erica Huckins from Plymouth State (7-6 [7-5], 6-2) in
the semifinals and captured the flight championship with a win over
Kie Tanaka/Naomi Torii from Salem State (6-3, 6-3) in the finals. |

is currently 12-4 at number one singles and 15-4 at number one doubles
for 19.5 points on the season. |

|

Head
Coach Kelly Chartier’s team is 13-1 overall and captured its
fourth consecutive Little East Conference Regular Season Championship
with a perfect 7-0 mark.
Rhode Island
College has won 29 consecutive Little East Conference regular season
matches, having not lost a league contest since falling, 5-4, at
Plymouth State on Sept. 14, 2002. The squad’s 13 wins ties the school
record for the most wins in a season. |
