THREE FIRST HALF GOALS
LEAD ANCHORWOMEN PAST USM
RIC Heads to Semifinal Showdown with Top-seeded Western
Connecticut

Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College jumped out to a three-goal lead in the first half on
its way to a 4-1 win over Southern Maine in first round action of the
2006 Little East Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament. The
fourth-seeded Anchorwomen will face top-seeded and nationally ranked
Western Connecticut in Danbury on Friday, Nov. 3. |

Rhode Island
College dominated the first half, outshooting the fifth-seeded
Huskies, 15-3. Junior midfielder Leah Hayes (Coventry, RI)
scored in the fifth minute, netting her first goal of the season to
put the Anchorwomen on top, 1-0. Junior midfielder Krista MacKinnon
(Exeter, RI) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the
17th minute with her first tally of the season. Junior
forward Brittney Godbout (Cranston, RI) came off the bench and
buried her eighth goal of the season, firing in a sophomore midfielder
Kayla Fleming (Pawtucket, RI) shot that had ricocheted off the
crossbar. |

Junior
forward Lindsey Laurie (Warwick, RI) chased down a lose ball in
the box and lofted a shot into the top corner to give RIC a 4-0 lead
in the 77th minute. Despite trailing the entire contest,
the Huskies put tremendous pressure on the Anchorwomen during the
second stanza. Southern Maine narrowly missed scoring off several set
plays and outshot RIC, 16-9, in final frame. Sophomore forward
Caitlin Brown (Camden, ME) finally put the Huskies on the
scoreboard, bending in a corner kick in the 87th minute,
with her team-leading seventh goal. |

Rhode Island
College sophomore goalkeeper Krissie Pyzynski (Bristol, CT)
made five saves to improve her record to 12-4. |

|
|
Southern
Maine junior goalkeeper Meghan Ibar (Milwaukee, WI) made eight
saves as her record falls to 3-6. |
