COLONIALS
ELIMINATE ANCHORWOMEN FROM LEC TOURNEY
Three-goal First Half Leads to RIC’s Demise
|
|
Danbury,
CT—Fourth-seeded
Rhode Island College saw its 2006 Little East Conference Women’s
Soccer Tournament Championship hopes end in a 4-0 loss to top-seeded
and nationally ranked Western Connecticut. The Anchorwomen, who are
14-7 overall, will turn their attention to a possible bid in the 2006
Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Div. III
Women’s Soccer Tournament, which will be announced on Monday, Nov. 6. |
|
|
|
With the
win, the Colonials, 18-1-1, advance to the LEC Championship game on
Saturday at 2 p.m. Their opponent will be determined following
Friday's second semifinal game between second-seeded Eastern
Connecticut State University and third-seeded Keene State College. |

Senior
midfielder Jessica Gomes (Wallingford, CT) put the Colonials on
the scoreboard just inside 10 minutes with her 12th goal of
the season. She was left wide open in the middle of the box following
a pass from freshman Nicole Sieber (Newtown, CT). Catherine
Nathans (New Fairfield, CT) made it 2-0 when she headed home her
record-breaking 21st goal of the season 11:16 into the contest.
Nathans surpassed Nicole Corbin's single-season 20 goals scored
during the 2004 campaign. Heather Falzone (Barkamstead, CT)
netted her first collegiate goal in the 34th minute to give WestConn a
3-0 bulge heading into intermission. Sieber added an insurance goal in
the 60th minute, her fifth tally of the season. |
|
|
|
Jenna Cappellieri (Stratford, CT) made one save
for the Colonials before yielding to Ashley Griffin (Newington, CT)
for the final 30 minutes. Griffin also made one stop. Krissie
Pyzynski (Bristol, CT) made 12 saves for the Anchorwomen. |

|
The
Colonials are ranked fourth nationally in the latest NSCAA Division
III Women's Soccer Poll and remained first in New England for the
seventh straight week. It is the highest national ranking for the
Colonials in program history. WestConn won the Little East Conference
title and appeared in the NCAA Tournament five straight years from
1997 through 2001. |
