Warriors Once Again End Anchorwomen’s Season
Eastern Connecticut Takes Down RIC, 3-0, in LEC Title Match

Willimantic, CT— Top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University won the 2006 Little East Conference Women’s Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 shutout over second-seeded Rhode Island College on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors (30-9), who won the LEC title in 2005 as well, are headed to the 2006 NCAA Div. III Women’s Volleyball Tournament for the second consecutive year. The Anchorwomen (20-13) have their season ended for the third consecutive season by ECSU, who also took out RIC in the semifinals in both 2004 and 2005.

Eastern Connecticut has now won 15 of its last 17 matches. The Warriors have not lost a game (12-0) in LEC tournament competition since being eliminated by Plymouth State in the ’04 final. It is the Warriors sixth LEC title and ECSU has been in the championship match in every season except for one.

For the second straight year, Eastern Connecticut senior defensive specialist Marianna Capomolla (Stamford, CT) was voted the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Last year’s conference Defensive Player-of-the-Year, Capomolla made only one reception error on 58 opportunities in the tournament. She also had 42 digs -- 29 coming in the semifinal victory – and seven service aces that give her 98 on the year.

Other top players for Eastern included junior middle blocker Emma Sousa (Coventry, CT), senior outside hitter Jessica Keogh (Monroe, CT), and junior setter Priscilla Dougherty (Island Park, NY). Sousa totaled 26 kills  in the tournament, while Keogh posted 22 (11 in both tournament matches). Sousa, the conference leader in points during the regular season, attacked at .378 in the tournament, Keogh at .246. Dougherty, who set a program season record for assists Friday night, collected 67 assists in the tournament, averaging over 11 per game. In the tournament, Keogh also added 32 digs and Dougherty 29.

Rhode Island College junior outside hitter Madison Greene (Cranston, RI) compiled a team-high 11 kills for the Anchorwomen in the final, with senior middle hitter Erin Miga (Cranston, RI) adding seven. As a team, Rhode Island had 28 kills and 29 errors for a .009 attack percentage in the match.

Senior defensive specialist Stephanie Wojciechowski (North Kingstown, RI) led Rhode Island College with 14 digs and made only three errors on 34 receptions. Wojciechowski received 25 serves before making her first error. Freshman outside hitter Sharon Corriveau (Coventry, RI) added nine digs and senior defensive specialist Kara Sarcione (Londonderry, NH) chipped in with seven. Junior setter Jeanne Rosa (Milford, CT) had 15 assists and four service aces.

Miga ends her career as an Anchorwoman as the program’s all-time leader in kills, hitting percentage and blocks. Wojciechowski leaves RIC as the team’s all-time digs leader.

Head Coach Craig Letourneau’s team had never made it to the Little East title game prior to this season. The Anchorwomen have registered 20 or more wins in each of the past two seasons. RIC had only been shutout on three other occasions this fall heading into the tourney final. The 62 points accumulated by the Anchorwomen was their third-lowest offensive output of the year.
