Anchormen Sweeps Salem State
Riley Raises Winning Streak to 31 games
|
|
Salem, MA—
The
Rhode Island College softball team won its fifth straight game this
afternoon taking a pair from Salem State College in a non-conference
doubleheader. Senior pitcher Nicole Riley (North
Providence, RI)
recorded a season-high 13 strikeouts and only surrendered one hit in
five innings as the Anchorwomen shut out the Vikings, 8-0, in the
opener. Rhode Island College used a well-balanced offensive attack as
four players registered multiple hits in the nightcap as the visitors
overpowered their hosts, 10-2. |

|
Riley, who did not
allow a walk, struck out seven of the first 10 batters, and closed the
game by fanning five of the last six she faced in the game one
victory. Rhode Island College took control of the game early, scoring
seven runs in the first three innings. Junior first baseman
Christie Lotti (Waterford,
CT)
cracked the scoring column in the first frame, driving a triple to
center field and scoring on an error by the center fielder. The
Anchorwomen added a pair in the top of the second before delivering
the knockout blow in the third with four runs. Sophomore
Kelli McCartin (Cranston,
RI)
capped the stanza with an RBI sacrifice bunt, plating freshman second
baseman Mandy Shurgot (Woonsocket,
RI).
Salem State starter Samantha Clark (Maynard,
MA)
pitched three innings, surrendering six hits, six earned runs, and
pair of walks to take the loss. |

Rhode Island
College jumped out to an early three-run advantage in the first frame
of the second game, but Salem State responded with two runs in the
bottom half to cut the deficit to one. The Anchorwomen sealed the
contest with a five-run fourth inning to balloon their lead to 8-2.
Lotti provided the thunder with a two-out, three-run homer to chase
Vikings’ starter sophomore Katelyn Doherty (Lynnfield,
MA).
Doherty gave up nine hits, three earned runs, and a walk in 3.2
innings of work. Freshman pitcher Jenna
Deveines (Lowville,
NY)
earned the victory in relief for starter classmate
Jamie Sacco (Bellingham,
MA).
Deveines threw four innings and limited Salem State to three hits,
while Sacco tossed the first three. |

Rhode Island
