Anchormen Salvage Spilt in Little
East Conference Opener
Cardoso Caps RIC Rally in Game Two
|
|
Providence, RI—The
Rhode Island College baseball team split a Little East Conference
doubleheader with rival Keene State College this afternoon at
Anchorman Field. The Owls showcased a well-balanced lineup to take
game one, 8-1, while the Anchormen rallied from a 3-0 deficit with
eight unanswered runs to salvage the nightcap, 8-3. Both teams were
opening their conference circuits. |
|
|
|
In the opener,
Keene State College (11-7, 1-1 LEC) received production from its
entire starting nine as each student-athlete earned at least a hit.
Senior catcher John Grainger (Keene, NH) and sophomore second
baseman James Chevalier (Amherst, NH) registered two hits and
two RBI to pace the Owl attack, while senior starting pitcher Rick
Stromgren (Keene, NH) threw seven-plus innings, scattering seven
hits and giving up just one earned run, to pick up the victory.
|
|
|
|
Keene State scored
the first five runs of the game and never trailed by less than four
runs. Rhode Island College (8-5, 1-1) senior pitcher Wade Briggs
(Woonsocket, RI) was tabbed with the loss, but struck out six in
six and a third innings of work. |
|
|
|
Despite Keene
State jumping out to an early three-run advantage by the fourth inning
of game two, Rhode Island College stormed back to tie the game in the
bottom of the frame. Sophomore center fielder B.J. Doyon (Douglas,
MA) and senior catcher Tim Henault (East Greenwich, RI)
were aboard when senior right fielder Mike Naylor (Warwick, RI)
hit a one-out, two-RBI frozen rope into the right field gap to cut the
deficit to one. Naylor advanced to third base on a fly ball to right
field, setting up senior third basemen Luis Feliz (Cranston, RI)
for an RBI fielder’s choice to pull the contest even at three.
|
|
|
|
The Anchormen
gained their first advantage of the afternoon on a bases loaded walk
to junior first basemen Jim Connell (Smithfield, RI), scoring
sophomore left fielder Chris O’Connors (North Kingstown, RI),
in the sixth inning. The hosts pushed two more runs across on a Feliz
sacrifice fly and a Keene State error to build a 6-3 lead.

|
|
|
Sophomore
shortstop Josh Cardoso (Dartmouth, MA) sealed the victory with
a two-run homer (2) in the bottom of the seventh to cap the
afternoon’s scoring. Freshman pitcher Paul Vatter (Warwick, RI)
limited the visitors to just two hits in 2.1 scoreless innings of
relief to earn his first collegiate victory. Classmate Robert
Germane (Barrington, RI) started for the Anchormen, allowing three
earned runs on eights hits to go along with six strikeouts. Keene
State freshman Bret Sonberg (Bow, NH) took the loss in relief
of senior Jon Young (Rindge, NH). |
