RILEY KEEPS STREAK ALIVE IN PERFECT GAME
Anchorwomen Take Two From Lasell
|
|
Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College senior pitcher Nicole Riley (North
Providence, RI)
improved her NCAA Div. III softball winning streak to 38 games, firing
her second career perfect game and third career no-hitter, to stay
unbeaten with a 15-0 record as the Anchorwomen swept a doubleheader
from Lasell at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Tuesday
afternoon. |
|
|
|
Riley
set down all 21 batters she faced in a game one, 4-0, victory. She
struck out 13 Lasers, the second highest single-game total in her
career. It was Riley’s second career perfect game and her first
seven-inning gem. Her previous no-hitters came in 2006 and 2005
against UMass Boston, both of which were in five innings. Riley set
down all 15 Beacons she faced to record her first perfect game on Apr.
16, 2005. |
|
|
|
The
Anchorwomen (20-2) scored one run in each of the first four innings
off of Lasell freshman pitcher Nicole Slader (North Smithfield, RI).
RIC junior first baseman Christie Lotti (Waterford, CT) went
2-for-2 with two runs scored, two RBI, a homer (2) and a stolen base
to pace the offense. Lotti led off the first with a walk, stole second
and eventually scored on a wild pitch with what proved to be the
game-winning run. |
|
|
|
Lotti
plated freshman designated player Stephanie Brown (Norton, MA)
with an RBI single in the second and Brown plated junior third baseman
Krystal Bilek (Fitchburg, MA) with an infield hit in the third.
Lotti blasted her second home run of the season with a one-out solo
shot in the fourth to round out the Anchorwomen’s scoring. Slader
(4-4) allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on six hits, to
go along with three strikeouts and four walks in six innings of work. |

Rhode
Island College stepped on the gas in game two, crushing the Lasers
(8-11), 15-2. An 11-run, nine-hit outburst by the Anchorwomen in the
second inning sealed Lasell’s fate. Freshman second baseman Mandy
Shurgot (Woonsocket, RI) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and
an RBI, while sophomore designated player Justine Burgess
(Uxbridge, MA) went 1-for-2 with a bases-clearing three-run triple
in the second frame. Five Anchorwomen notched multiple hits with
freshman first baseman Cassie Taverna (Bedford, MA), junior
catcher Jeanne Rosa (Milford, CT) and freshman right fielder
Michelle Perrin (Saugus, MA) each contributing two knocks.
Freshman pitcher Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY) earned her
second win (2-0), allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out
three. Lasell freshman pitcher Jaqueline Losseff (Pt. Pleasant, NJ)
took the loss (4-5), allowing 11 runs, nine of which were earned, on
nine hits in just two innings of action. |
|
|
|
Head
Coach Maria Morin’s team is currently 20-2 overall and has won
their last 15 games. The Anchorwomen have not lost since returning
from their spring trip. |
