Men’s
Tennis Places Fifth at the
2007 Little East Conference Men’s Tennis Championships |
|
|
|
Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College finished the 2007 season, placing fifth at the Little
East Conference Men’s Tennis Championships with 8.0 Points. Southern
Maine won the title and advanced to the NCAA Div. III Championships
with 19.0 points. |

No. 1 Singles |
|
Fifth-seeded
senior Barry Manfredi (Westerly, RI) was defeated by
fourth-seeded Western Connecticut junior Wayne Tentler
(Johannesburg, South Africa), 8-2, in opening round action of the
No. 1 Singles Flight. Manfredi rebounded to win his consolation match
to go 1-1 at the championships. |

Sixth-seeded
senior Tauquir Puthawala (Lincoln, RI) was defeated by
third-seeded Western Connecticut sophomore Matt Fogel (Westport,
CT), 8-4, in opening round action of the No. 2 Singles Flight. He
went 1-1 in consolation action to finish out with a 1-2 record at the
championships. |

Sixth-seeded
sophomore Garrett Smith (Providence, RI) was defeated by
third-seeded Colin Robertson (Newtown, CT) of Western
Connecticut, 8-1, in opening round action of the No. 3 Singles Flight.
He went 1-1 in consolation action to finish out with a 1-2 record at
the championships. |

junior Lorne Teeter (Warwick, RI) was defeated by sixth-seeded
UMass Boston junior Glen Schleehauf (Milton, MA), 8-1, in
opening round action of the No. 4 Singles Flight. He dropped his
consolation match to finish out with an 0-2 record at the
championships. |

Fourth-seeded
junior Rolando Yotharath (Woonsocket, RI) advanced to the
semifinals of the No. 5 Singles Flight with an 8-5 victory over Salem
State sophomore Jim Lozzi (Topsfield, MA). He fell to
top-seeded Southern Maine
sophomore Derek Stevenson (Raymond, ME), the eventual Little
East Champion at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-1, in the semifinals |

sophomore David Haggerty (Woonsocket, RI) lost to seventh-seeded
UMass Dartmouth sophomore Alex Samoiloff (Princeton, MA), 6-1,
0-6, 6-4, in the finals match of the No. 6 Singles Flight. He defeated
fourth-seeded Bridgewater State junior Greg Nelson (Ashburnham, MA),
6-4, 7-5, in the semifinals after receiving a bye in opening round
action. |

Tauquir Puthawala (Lincoln, RI) and freshman Jawad Sefiani
(Pawtucket, RI) were defeated by Bridgewater State senior Matt
Kelly (Tiverton, RI) and sophomore Matt Charest (Somerset, MA),
8-1, in opening round action of the No. 1 Doubles Flight. They fell in
their consolation match to go 0-2 at the championships. |

Senior Barry
Manfredi (Westerly, RI) and junior Lorne Teeter (Warwick, RI)
were defeated by UMass Dartmouth senior Chris Sims
(Chelmsford, MA) and freshman Ken Sims (Chelmsford, MA),
9-8, in opening round action of the No. 2 Doubles Flight. They
rebounded to win both of their consolation matches to go 2-1 at the
championships. |

Juniors Tom
Lapierre (Mapleville, RI) and Rolando Yotharath (Woonsocket,
RI), 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) were defeated by Bridgewater State sophomore
Brendon Barbo (Yarmouthport, MA) and junior Barry Gorman
(Hopedale, MA) in the finals match at No. 3 doubles. They had
defeated UMass Boston sophomore Amit Kumar (Bangalore, India)
and freshman C. Albert Thompson (Compton, CA), 8-6, in
the first round and UMass Dartmouth junior Eric Dusseault (Taunton,
MA) and sophomore Alex Samoiloff (Princeton, MA), 6-3, 7-5,
in the semifinals. |
