Elizabeth Barrette Receives
Rhode Island College’s
Helen M. Murphy Award
|

|
Providence,
RI—Rhode
Island College senior Elizabeth Barrette (North Providence, RI)
received Rhode Island College’s Helen M. Murphy award at the
College’s annual Cap and Gown ceremony on Wednesday, May 2.
The
award is based not only on athletic prowess, but also values
community and campus involvement and honors an outstanding Rhode
Island College senior woman athlete. |

|
Barrette
wrapped up a stellar four-year career in women’s tennis in the fall
of 2005. She posted
a 43-18 (.705) career singles record and a 50-15 (.796) career
doubles mark for 68.0 career points. Barrette is third all-time at
RIC in career points, third in career singles wins and tied for
first in career doubles wins. She is also 12th in career
singles winning percentage and seventh in career doubles winning
percentage. Over the course of her
career, she helped lead the Anchorwomen to three consecutive Little
East Conference Regular Season Championships and two LEC Tournament
titles. |

|
As a senior in 2005, Barrette was the Little East
Conference Champion at number one doubles. She was 11-3 (.786) at
number one singles and 19-2 (.882) at number one doubles for 18.5
points on the season. She was tied for second on the team in singles
wins, tied for first on the team in doubles wins and third in total
points. While teaming up with freshman Megan Hall, the 15
doubles wins established a new RIC single-season record. Barrette
was named Little East Conference Player of the Week once on the
season and was named the team’s MVP. |

|
As a junior in 2004, she was 10-5 (.667) at number
one singles and 9-6 (.600) at number one doubles for 14.5 points on
the season. Barrette was third on the team in singles wins and
points and was tied for third in doubles victories. She was selected
to the Rhode Island College Women’s Tennis All-75th
Anniversary team in May of 2005. |

|
As a sophomore in 2003, Barrette
was 12-5
(.706) at number one singles and 13-4 (.765) at number one doubles
for a team-high 18.5 points on the season. Barrette was tied for the
team lead in singles wins. |
|
|
|
As a freshman in 2002, she
was the
Little East Conference Champion at number one doubles. Barrette was
10-5 (.667) at number one singles and 13-3 (.813) at number one
doubles for a total of 16.5 points on the season. |

|
|
She is a physical education/health major and a 2001
graduate of La Salle Academy. |

ABOUT THE
HELEN M. MURPHY AWARD |
|
The Murphy
Award was established in 1979 and sponsored by the faculty of the
Henry Barnard School to honor an outstanding Rhode Island College
senior woman athlete. The award is named for Helen M. Murphy, a
graduate of Rhode Island College in 1939, who was a member of the
faculty for 38 years and taught at the Henry Barnard School,
beginning in 1941, until her retirement in 1979. |
