Rhode Island College Announces
2007 Spring Sports MVPs
|
|
|
|
|
|
Providence, RI--
The Rhode Island College Department of Intercollegiate
Athletics, Intramurals and Recreation held its annual Spring Banquet
at RIC’s Donovan Dining Center on Monday, May 7 to honor those
student-athletes who participate in varsity spring athletics. Each
sport gave out their Most Valuable Player Award. |

|
BASEBALL
|
|
Senior
right fielder Mike Naylor (Warwick, RI) was named the
baseball team’s MVP. Naylor has
played in 33 games, starting all of them. He is batting .385
(47-for-122) with 32 runs scored, 12 doubles, a triple, seven home
runs and 37 RBI. He owns a .672 slugging percentage and a .476
on-base percentage. He was named the Little East Conference’s Player
of the Week once on the season. He became Rhode Island College’s
all-time career hits leader, notching his 188th knock in
a 12-6 win over Plymouth State on Saturday, May 5. Naylor also tied
the RIC record for career runs (131) in the same game. |

He is a
general management major and a 2002 graduate of Toll Gate High
School. |

|
Men’s Golf
|
|
Senior
Shawn Rebocho (Albion, RI) was named the men’s golf team’s MVP.
In 18 competitions over the fall and spring seasons, Rebocho
averaged a score of 80.1. He shot a career low score of 71 vs. Elms
and Wentworth at Triggs Memorial Golf Course on Apr. 11. Rebocho
placed third overall with a score of 77 at the first annual Little
East Conference/Great Northeast Athletic Conference Alliance
Championship with a score of 77 on Apr. 27. |

accounting major and a 2003 graduate of Lincoln, High School. |
|
|
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
|
|
Junior defender Erin Duffy (North Dighton, MA) was named the
women’s lacrosse team’s MVP. She played in 14 games, starting all of
them. She recorded four goals and one assist for five points to go
along with 51 ground balls. |
|
She is a
nursing major and a 2004 graduate of Dighton-Rehoboth High School. |
|
|
SOFTBALL
|
|
Senior pitcher Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI) was named
the softball team’s MVP. She has appeared in 37 games, starting 30
of them. Riley is 26-3 with a 0.82 earned run average and two saves.
She has struck out 207 batters in 186.2 innings of work and logged
11 shutouts. Riley is Rhode Island College’s all-time leader in
career wins, games started and relief appearances. She is second in
strikeouts and innings pitched, while ranking third in career ERA.
Riley owns the longest consecutive winning streak in NCAA Div. III
softball history (43 games). |

physical education major and a 2003 graduate of North Providence
High School. |

MEN'S TENNIS
|
|
Sophomore David Haggerty
(Woonsocket, RI) was named the men's tennis team's MVP. Haggerty
posted a 12-3 (.800) record at No. 6 singles on the season. He also
went 2-2 in limited doubles action to compile 13.0 points. Haggerty
advanced to the Championship Match in the No. 6 singles flight at
the 2007 Little East Conference Men's Tennis Championships. |

He is a
finance major with a minor in computer information systems and a
2004 graduate of Woonsocket High School. |

MEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD
|
|
Senior
Eric
Lonergan
(North Kingstown, RI)
was named the men’s outdoor track & field team’s MVP. He
earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in
three events. He placed first in the 1,500 meters with a time of
3:56.06, eighth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:00.78 and first
in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:30.23. at the Little East/MASCAC
Alliance Championships on Apr. 28. Lonergan placed first in both the
1,500 and 3,000 meters with times of 4:00.00 and 15:54.76,
respectively, at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 21. He placed first
in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:03.16 at the Wesleyan
Invitational on Apr. 14. Lonergan placed first in the 1,500 meters
and second in the 800 meters with times of 4:02.19 and 1:59.00,
respectively, at the RIC Invitational on Mar. 31. |

He is an elementary education major with a concentration in general
science and a 2003 graduate of North Kingstown High School. |

|
WOMEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD
|
|
Sophomore
Kayla Fleming (Pawtucket, RI) was named the women’s outdoor
track & field team’s MVP. Fleming earned
All-New England honors in the high jump, placing fourth at 1.56
meters at the N.E. Div. III Championships on May 5. She earned
All-Alliance/Little East honors in five events, placing eighth as
part of the 4x100 relay team with a time of 56.53, first in the 800
meters with a time of 2:23.83, seventh as part of the 4x400 relay
team with a time of 4:37.62, second in the long jump with a distance
of 5.13 meters and first in the high jump with a leap of 1.65 meters
at the Little East/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Apr. 28. She was
named the women’s indoor track & field team’s MVP as well this past
winter. |

She is an
