Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College has named Denis Chartier as its new head women’s
lacrosse coach. Chartier takes over Ryan Angel who stepped down
in the summer to take an assistant women’s soccer coach’s position at
Brandeis University. Chartier is the third coach in the program’s
six-year history. |

|
“The women’s
lacrosse head coaching position is a great opportunity for me
personally,” said Chartier. “I look forward to taking the lacrosse
program to the next step and competing for a conference title.” |
|

|
Chartier is
also RIC’s head women’s soccer coach. In his first season this past
fall, Chartier led his charges to an overall record of 14-8, including
a 3-4-0 mark in the Little East Conference. He established a new
benchmark for wins in a single-season, adding four to the previous
standard. Chartier also set the single-season record for most
consecutive victories, registering nine straight wins between Sept. 9
and Oct. 4, 2006. The Anchorwomen earned their first berth into the
Eastern College Athletic Conference New England Division III
Tournament. |

|
“Coaching
both programs gives me a great opportunity to mentor my
student-athletes,” said Chartier. |

Rhode Island
College returns eight student-athletes, including seven upperclassmen,
from last season’s 3-13 squad. The Anchorwomen welcome back five of
their top six scorers led by senior forward Caitlin Gavin
(Portsmouth, RI). The three-time Little East All-Conference
selection led the nation in ground balls per game (6.31), while
ranking second in goals per game (6.06) and third in points per game
(6.69). |
