ANCHORMEN FALL TO TOP-RANKED AMHERST, 62-48

Providence, RI—No. 1 Amherst College increased its
school-record winning streak to 21 games and remains unbeaten in a
62-48 win over Rhode Island College at The Murray Center on Tuesday
evening. The Lord Jeffs remain the only unbeaten team in Div. III
men’s basketball with a 21-0 record. The Anchormen fall to 16-3 and
record only their seventh loss at home since the start of the 2003
season. |

Rhode Island College trailed early, but went on a 12-0 run to take a
16-8 lead with 11:22 remaining in the first half. Sophomore guard
Tirrell Hill (Bronx, NY) hitting a jumper to give the
Anchormen a 20-14 lead with 5:20 remianing. Amherst senior forward
Tim McLaughlin (Chatham, NJ) keyed a 12-4 run to give the
Lord Jeffs a 26-24 lead at the break. McLaughlin hit a layup and two
three-pointers during the run. |

Amherst kept the Anchormen at bay in the second stanza and slowly
pulled away down the stretch. The Lord Jeffs built a 19-point lead,
62-43, with 1:19 remaining and cruised to the victory. Rhode Island
College held Amherst to its lowest offensive output on the season,
however the Anchormen shot just 28 percent (16-for-58) from the
field and 19 percent (5-for-27) from downtown. |

McLaughlin scored a career-high 23 points on 8-for-13 shooting to go
along with six boards, two assists and two steals. Sophomore forward
Brian Baskauskas (Palo Alto, CA) logged a double-double with
11 points and 11 rebounds, while senior forward Dan Wheeler
(Bloomington, MN) recorded a 14-point effort. |

The Anchormen were led by Hill and senior guard Kinsey Durgin
(Greenwood, ME) with 15 and 10 points, respectively. |
|
|
|
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Little East
Conference rival Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, Feb. 3. Amherst
will host Connecticut College on Friday, Feb. 2. |
