BAILEY SPEARHEADS ANCHORMEN TO, 74-56, WIN
RIC APPROACHES 20 WINS IN VICTORY OVER SOUTHERN MAINE |

Gorham, ME—Rhode Island College downed Southern Maine,
74-56, on Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium to climb within one
win victory of 20 wins for the second time over the past three
seasons. Sophomore Bobby Bailey (Fall River, MA) led the
Anchormen with 16 points, five boards and three assists to keep RIC
in first place in the Little East Conference. Rhode Island College
is 19-3 overall and 10-2 in league play with two games left in the
regular season. The Huskies fell to 6-16 overall and 2-10 in the LEC
with the loss. |

Bailey led all scorers with a 7-for-11 effort from the field.
Sophomore forward Kaseem Johnson (New Haven, CT) added
10 points for the Anchormen, while seniors center Anthony
Pierlioni (Plainville, CT), forward Brian Stanko
(Swansea, MA) and guard Kamari Williams
(Springfield, MA) each chipped in with eight points apiece. |

The Anchormen overcame an eight-point deficit at the 14-minute mark
of the second half to surge past Southern Maine. Following an
offensive rebound and the put-back from junior forward Drew
Coppenrath (Barnet, VT), USM enjoyed its largest lead of
the half, 49-41, with 13:57 on the clock. However, the Anchormen
were able to come out of a time out and outscore the Huskies 16-0
over the next six minutes to go ahead 57-49 with 8:06 remaining.
Williams scored five of his 10 points in the decisive run as Rhode
Island College received points from five different players. |

Southern Maine was able to snap its scoring drought on a jumper from
Oakley with 7:51 to play to trail by six, 57-51, but Rhode Island
College responded scoring the next 11 points of the game, including
a pair of three-pointers from senior guard Kinsey Durgin
(Greenwood, ME), to take a commanding 68-51 lead with 5:38
remaining. Southern Maine never got closer than 14 points the rest
of the way as Rhode Island College cruised to the win. |

Rhode Island College finished the game shooting a respectable 45.1
percent from the field making 32 of its 71 field goal attempts. The
Huskies shot 36.2 percent (21-for-58) and were hampered by 20
turnovers. |

|
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host UMass Dartmouth
on Tuesday, Feb. 13 on Senior Night. Durgin, Stanko, Williams,
Pierlioni, along with fellow seniors John Weir (Danbury, CT) and
Amde Tegbaru (Stockholm, Sweden) will be honored prior to the game. |
