2006 Rhode Island College Men’s Soccer Season Summary |
|
(10-6-1 Overall; 4-2-1
in the Little East Conference) |
|
Providence, RI—Head
Coach John Mello’s team (Career record: 33-20-8, .607) closed
out the 2006 season with a 10-6-1 overall record and a 4-2-1 (third
place) mark in the Little East Conference. |
|
|
|
Rhode Island College won 10 or more games for the fifth consecutive
season and for the sixth time in the past seven campaigns. |
|
|
|
The Anchormen downed Montclair State, 3-2, on Oct. 5. The Red Hawks,
who were ranked ninth nationally at the time, finished the season
with a 20-1-1 record, suffering their only loss of the year to the
Anchormen. |
|
|
|
Senior forward Chris Childs (Cranston, RI) closed out his
career having played in 68 games, starting nine of them. He totaled
11 goals and 11 assists for 33 career points. |
|
|
|
As a senior in 2006, he played in 17 games, starting one of them. He
had four goals and four assists for 11 points. Childs scored the
game-winning goal in the Anchormen’s,
2-0, win at Bridgewater State on Oct. 11. |
|
|
|
As a junior in 2005, he
played in 18 games, starting four of them. He had three goals and
one assist for seven points. He scored both the game-tying and
game-winning goals in RIC’s 2-1, overtime win at Plymouth State. |
|
|
|
As a sophomore in 2004, Childs
played in 20 games, starting three of them. He had three goals and
four assists for ten points. |
|
|
|
Childs did not play the 2003 season. As a freshman in 2002, he
played in 13 games, starting one of them. Childs had one goal and
two assists for four points on the season. |
|
|
|
He is a physical education/health major, with a minor in biology,
and a 2002 graduate of Cranston High School West. |
|
|
|
Senior midfielder Holman Giraldo (Pawtucket, RI) had his
season cut short by an injury. He played in five games, starting two
of them. |
|
|
|
Senior midfielder Nic Rossi (North Kingstown, RI) closed out
his career having played in 70 games, starting 62 of them. He had
five goals and ten assists for 20 career points. |
|
|
|
As a senior in 2006, he played in 16 games, starting all of them. He
had three goals and one assist for seven points. |
|
|
|
As a junior in 2005, he
played in 19 games, starting 14 of them. He had three assists for
three points on the season. |
|
|
|
As a sophomore in 2004, he
played in 18 games, starting 15 of them. He had one goal and two
assists for four points. |
|
|
|
As a freshman in 2003, he
played in
17 games, starting all of them. He had one goal and four assists for
six points on the year. |
|
|
|
He is a secondary education major with a concentration in history
and a 2003 graduate of Bishop Hendricken High School. |
|
|
|
Senior back Nick Tavares (East Providence, RI) closed out his
two-year career as an Anchorman, playing in 39 games, starting all
of them. He had one goal for two points. |
|
|
|
As a senior in 2006, Tavares was named Second Team All-Little East
Conference. He played in 17 games, starting all of them. As a junior
in 2005, he played in 22 games, starting all of them, and had one
goal for two points. |
|
|
|
Prior to coming to Rhode Island College, Tavares played two seasons
at Post University. He played in 37 games, starting 36 of them, with
one goal and one assist for three points. |
|
|
|
He is an accounting major and a 2003 graduate of East Providence
High School. |
|
|
|
Junior midfielder John Araujo (Pawtucket, RI) played in three
games, starting two of them. |
|
|
|
Junior forward Kyle Genereux (Harrisville, RI) missed nearly
the entire season with a torn hamstring. He played in three games,
starting one of them. He had one goal and one assists for three
points. Genereux scored the game-winning goal in the Anchormen’s,
4-1, win against M.I.T. on Sept. 9. |

|
Junior defender Jameson Gonzalez (Johnston, RI) played in 17
games, starting 15 of them. He had three assists for three points. |
|
|
|
Junior forward Jimmy Hernandez (Providence, RI) was named
Second Team All-Little East Conference. He played in 17 games,
starting all of them. Hernandez recorded a team-high 10 goals and 23
points to go along with three assists and three game-winning goals.
He was named the Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Week
once on the season. |

Junior defender Mike Keeling (Chepachet, RI) played in seven
games. |
|
|
|
Junior midfielder Julian Montoya (North Providence, RI) was
named Second Team All-Little East Conference. He played in 13 games,
starting 10 of them. Montoya had three goals and four assists for 10
points. He was tied for the team lead in assists, while ranking
fourth in points. |
|
|
|
Junior goalkeeper Jadon Neves (Warren, RI) appeared in 14
games, starting all of them. He was 8-5-1 with a 1.21 goals against
average, a .809 save percentage to go along with five shutouts.
Neves moved into a second place tie all-time at RIC with 14 career
shutouts. |
|
|
|
Junior defender James Nigrelli (Ashaway, RI) was named First
Team All-Little East Conference and was the team MVP. The co-captain
played in 17 games, starting all of them. |
|
|
|
Junior midfielder Derek Rocha (Fall River, MA) missed the
majority of the season with a knee injury. He played in nine games,
starting six of them. He had two goals and one assist for five
points. Rocha scored the game-winning goal in the Anchormen’s, 1-0,
win at Southern Maine on Sept. 16. |

|
|
Sophomore midfielder Derek Arsenault (Greenville, RI) played
in 17 games, starting 15 of them. He had one goal and two assists
for four points. He scored the game-winning goal in the Anchormen’s,
3-0, win at UMass Dartmouth on Sept. 30. |
|
|
|
Sophomore midfielder Johan Giraldo (Central Falls, RI) played
in 10 games, starting five of them. |
|
|
|
Sophomore midfielder Brandon Migliore (Coventry, RI) played
in 17 games, starting 16 of them. He had one goal and four assists
for six points. He was tied for the team lead in assists. |
|
|
|
Sophomore defender Corey Ponte (Warwick, RI) played in one
game. |
|
|
|
Sophomore defender Kyle Remy (Bristol, RI) missed the
majority of the season with a broken arm. He played in five games,
starting one of them. |
|
|
|
Sophomore forward Dan Rodrigues (Cumberland, RI) played in
six games, starting one of them. He had one goal for two points. He
also logged 31:23 in net, allowing one goal and making one save vs.
Roger Williams on Oct. 24. |
|
|
|
Sophomore defender Josh Silva (Dartmouth, MA) played in 14
games, starting all of them. The co-captain had two goals for four
points. |
|
|
|
Sophomore defender Matt White (Wakefield, RI) played in 12
games, starting three of them. |
|
|
|
Freshman forward Jose Talavera (Providence, RI) played in 17
games, starting 10 of them. He had six goals, including three
game-winners, for 12 points. Talavera was second on the team in
goals and tied for second in points. He was named the Little East
Conference Rookie of the Week once on the season. |

Freshman forward Brian White (Wakefield, RI) played in 17
games, starting two of them. |
