ANCHORMEN CLINCH LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE TITLE IN WIN OVER UMASS
BOSTON
RIC To Host Eighth-Seeded Southern Maine on Tuesday Night |

Boston, MA—Rhode Island College clinched the Little East
Conference Regular Season Title in a 90-72 win at UMass Boston at
the Clark Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. It is the second
regular season conference title for the Anchormen and the first
outright LEC crown in program history. Rhode Island College shared
the 2005 title with Western Connecticut. |

Head Coach Bob Walsh’s team finished up the regular season
with a 21-3 overall record and a 12-2 mark in the Little East. It is
the most wins in a season for a RIC men’s basketball team since the
1978-79 cagers went 21-7. The 12 LEC wins are also a single season
school record. |

|
The Anchormen earned homecourt advantage throughout the 2007 Little
East Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament. Rhode Island College
will host eighth-seeded Southern Maine in first round action at The
Murray Center on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. If the Anchormen defeat
the Huskies, they will host the Little East semifinal and
championship rounds for the first time in school history on Feb. 23
and 24. |

Rhode Island College, which was upset in the semifinals of the 2006
LEC tourney by the Beacons, opened an 18-point halftime lead, 45-27,
and cruised to the win. The Anchormen led by 20 points just 3:37
into the second frame and the Beacons were unable to mount a serious
comeback down the stretch. RIC completed the season sweep of UMass
Boston, having defeated the Beacons, 86-77, on Jan. 13. |

Senior forward Brian Stanko (Swansea, MA) had 12 points, on
4-of-6 shooting from three-point land, in the first stanza, while
sophomores Tirrell Hill (Bronx, NY) and Bobby Bailey (Fall
River, MA) chipped in with nine points. Senior guard Kinsey
Durgin (Greenwood, ME) led the Anchormen with 10 second-half
points. |

Five Anchormen scored in double figures led by Stanko’s 15 points.
Durgin and Bailey had 13 apiece, while Hill and senior center
Anthony Pierlioni (Plainville, CT) contributed 11 points. |

|
Bailey played a key role throughout the game on both ends of the
floor. He also had a game-high eight assists and six steals.
Sophomore forward Kaseem Johnson (New Haven, CT) grabbed a
game-high 11 rebounds. |

|
UMass Boston senior forward Tony Barros (Dorchester, MA) led
all scorers with a game-high 27 points. He shot 9-for-23 from the
field and connected on a game-high six treys. He logged a
double-double as well with 10 boards. |

|
The 90-point effort by the Anchormen was the second-highest
regulation total of the season by the club. |
