RIC TAKES TWO FROM BOBCATS
Lotti Goes 5-For-9 and Scores Four as RIC Rolls Over Bates
Providence, RI—Rhode Island College swept
a doubleheader from Bates to improve to 8-4 on the season on a cold
and windy afternoon at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on
Friday. The Bobcats remain winless with a 0-6 mark. |
RIC
senior Christie Lotti (Waterford, CT) was a one-woman
wrecking crew, going 5-for-9 with four runs scored, three RBI, four
stolen bases and a double in the wins. |
The
Anchorwomen jumped out to a commanding, 4-0, lead in game one
through the first two innings. Lotti recorded an RBI single, and
later scored on a wild pitch, while freshman second baseman
Amanda Perry (New Bedford, MA) also plated a run with a single
as part of a three-run second frame. |
RIC
freshman designated hitter Laura DeNoncour (Johnston, RI)
blasted her first collegiate home run (1) with a drive over the left
field fence in the fifth inning and the Anchorwomen ended the
contest early in the sixth on Lotti’s two-RBI double. |
Sophomore pitcher Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY) picked up her
fourth win (4-2), hurling 4.1 innings, scattering just three hits,
before giving way to freshman Melanie Neece (Westfield, MA)
to close out the game. Neece allowed just one hit, while striking
out two, to preserve the shutout victory. Bates freshman pitcher
Sarah Cullen (Dover, MA) took the loss (0-2), allowing six runs,
five of which were earned, on seven hits through 5.0 innings of
work. |
Game
two started out as a closely contested game, with the Bobcats taking
an early, 1-0, lead on junior first baseman Val Beckwith’s
(Woburn, MA) RBI single off of Neece in the third inning. |
The
lead was short-lived as the Anchorwomen quickly regained the
advantage, 2-1, in the bottom of the frame. Lotti scored on an error
after leading off with a single, while freshman left fielder
Donielle Mattoon (Coventry, RI) knocked in the go-ahead run with
a single of her own. |
Bates wasted little time in tying the game up, 2-2, as junior third
baseman Stacia Saniuk (Sharon, MA) led off with an opposite
field homer (1) to right field to start the fourth. The Anchorwomen
took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth on a sophomore
shortstop Kelsey Souza (Braintree, MA) two-RBI single to left
field. |
RIC
added five runs in its final at-bat, pounding out five hits and
capitalizing on two Bobcat errors. Souza, who posted a 2-for-3,
three-RBI performance in the game, logged an RBI single in the
frame. Neece earned her fourth (4-1) win, allowing three runs on six
hits, while striking out seven. Bates freshman starting pitcher
Heather Dwan (Litchfield, CT) took the loss (0-2), allowing five
runs on six hits, while striking out two. |
In
addition to Lotti, Perry had a solid pair of games, going a combined
4-for-5 with two RBI, one run scored and a double. |
In
upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Salem State for a
doubleheader tomorrow afternoon beginning at noon. |
