Providence, RI—Rhode Island College and
Southern Maine split a doubleheader in a battle of Little East
Conference collegiate baseball action Sunday afternoon at Anchorman
Field. RIC took game one, 3-1, while the Huskies salvaged the
nightcap, 7-1. |

RIC (13-6,
4-1 LEC) senior starting pitcher Eric Thibault (Somerset, MA)
was the story in game one, hurling 7.1 innings, allowing just one
unearned run on four hits, while striking out eight, to earn his
fourth win (4-1). Junior closer Eric Fama (Wappingers Falls, NY)
picked up his team-leading fourth save, striking two in 1.2 hitless
innings. The Anchormen got on the board in the third frame as senior
designated hitter Pete Olson (North Providence, RI) doubled
in junior catcher Jordan Amorin (Swansea, MA). Amorin gave
RIC some insurance runs in the seventh, notching a bases loaded,
two-run single up the middle to make the score, 3-0. The Huskies
(12-6, 3-1 LEC) put one across in the eighth, as Thibault hit
freshman catcher Jordan Berthiaume (Berlin, CT) before giving
way to Fama with one out. Junior shortstop Chris Burleson
(Portland, MA) grounded out to second, plating Berthiaume for
USM’s lone run. Southern Maine sophomore starting pitcher Collin
Henry (Penobscot, ME) was the hard-luck loser (2-2), going the
distance, allowing just two earned runs on five hits to go along
with four strikeouts. |

lead in game two, hurling a complete game win (2-1), allowing just
one run on seven hits, while striking out six. The Huskies jumped on
RIC freshman starting pitcher Gary Levesque (East Providence, RI)
in the top of the third, scoring three runs on five hits,
highlighted by Henry’s, who had move to first base, two-RBI double
to left field. Senior center fielder Eddie Skeffington (Everett,
MA) followed suit with an RBI single through the left side of
the infield. |

USM tacked
another run on in the fifth and three more in the seventh as junior
right fielder Andrew Stacy (Denmark, ME) contributed a
two-run single to right field. RIC junior shortstop Josh Cardoso
(Dartmouth, MA) accounted for the Anchormen’s lone run with a
leadoff homer (2) in the seventh. Levesque went five innings and
took the loss (1-1). |
