Bears’ 10-Run Third Sinks

Providence, RI—Bridgewater
State sent 15 players to the plate, scoring 10 runs on seven hits,
as the Bears went on to defeat Rhode Island College, 11-4, in
collegiate baseball action on Monday afternoon at Anchorman Field. |

|
Rhode Island College
started out with a three-run second inning, capped by RBI-doubles by
junior center fielder B.J. Doyon (Douglas, MA) and classmate
third baseman Jeff Costa (Pawtucket, RI). |
|
|
|
Bridgewater
State (11-5) junior starting pitcher David Liffers (Norwell, MA)
took over from there, throwing 132 pitches over six innings of work
to pick up his second (2-1) win of the season. Liffers allowed four
runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits, while recording
three strikeouts in his outing. Sophomore Ben Altman (East
Taunton, MA) and senior Brian Schilling (Weymouth, MA)
combined to shut out RIC (13-7), allowing just one hit, while
striking out five, over the final three innings. |

The Bears
pounced on Rhode Island College junior starting pitcher Bruce
Celico (Westerly, RI) in the top of the third. Sophomore third
baseman Mike Claffey (Bellingham, MA) led off with a walk and
senior first baseman Jarrett Mooney (North Attleboro, MA)
followed with a majestic home run (1) over the left field fence.
Bridgewater State kept the runs coming as Mooney contributed a
two-run single in his second at-bat of the frame. Celico (2-3) was
chased after just two innings of work, allowing four earned runs on
four hits and four walks. |

RIC sophomore
reliever Mike Boucher (Woonsocket, RI) was the Anchormen’s
hero on the day, throwing a career-high 6.1 innings during his
outing, while limiting the Bears to just one more run over the
course of the game. |

Mooney led
BSC offensively, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, four RBI and a
home run. Senior left fielder Steve Smith (East Taunton, MA)
notched a game-high four hits, going 4-for-6 with two runs scored
and two RBI. |

Doyon led the
Anchormen, going 2-for-3 with one run scored, two RBI and a double. |
|
|
|
In upcoming
action, Rhode Island College will resume the Little East Conference
schedule tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m. when it hosts UMass
Dartmouth. Bridgewater State will play at Wheaton on Wednesday, Apr.
9 at 4 p.m. |
