RIC Secures Season Sweep
of LEC Rivals

Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College senior starting pitcher Evan Grogan (East Lyme,
CT) hurled seven strong innings, while junior shortstop Josh
Cardoso (Dartmouth, MA) went 3-for-4, to lead the Anchormen to
a, 10-4, win over UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday afternoon at Anchorman
Field. |

Rhode Island College (14-7, 5-1)
completed the season sweep of their Little East rivals in a speedy
two-hour contest. |
|
|
|
Grogan was sharp in his second outing vs. the Corsairs in less than
a week. He allowed just two runs on three hits, while striking out
five to earn his third win (3-0) of the season. Junior reliever
Eric Fama (Wappingers Falls, NY) threw a scoreless ninth in the
victory. |

|
|
The Anchormen got on the board in the first inning as junior right
fielder Chris O’Connors (North Kingstown, RI) belted an
RBI-double, while Cardoso followed suit with an RBI single. Senior
first baseman Dylan Zygmont (Swansea, MA) tied the game up,
2-2, for the Corsairs (2-18, 1-5) with a solo homer (4) in the
second inning and an RBI double in the fourth. |

RIC quickly regained the lead, 4-2, in the home half of the fourth
as senior first baseman Jim Connell (Smithfield, RI) smacked
an RBI double and sophomore left fielder Jared Rossi (Johnston,
RI) chipped in with an RBI single. |

|
The Anchormen added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to
take a 7-2 lead into the eighth frame. UMass Dartmouth freshman
shortstop Ryan McDermott (Pembroke, MA) notched an RBI single
and Zygmont capped his three-RBI afternoon with a sacrifice fly to
pull the Corsairs within three runs, 7-4. |

Cardoso led off the bottom of the eighth by driving a 3-2 pitch over
the left field fence for his third bomb (3) of the season. Junior
catcher Jordan Amorin (Swansea, MA) hit an RBI double, while
classmate third baseman Jeff Costa (Pawtucket, RI)
contributed an RBI-single as part of a three-run outburst. |

UMD freshman starting pitcher Chris Contre (East Bridgewater, MA)
took the loss (0-5), allowing seven runs on 11 hits in six innings
of work. |
|
|
|
Cardoso and Costa each went 3-for-5 to lead RIC, while Zygmont went
2-for-2 for the Corsairs. |
|
|
|
In
upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Salve Regina
tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m. UMass Dartmouth will host Babson on
Friday, Apr. 11 at 3:30 p.m. |
