Martins Belts First
Collegiate Homer as RIC Earns 16th Victory

Providence, RI—The
Rhode Island College baseball team handed Newbury a 16-4 defeat on a
sunny and warm afternoon at Anchorman Field. RIC wraps up a six-game
home stand with a 4-2 mark and improves to 16-7 on the season. The
Nighthawks, who still searching for their first win of the season,
fall to 0-14. |

Junior center
fielder B.J. Doyon (Douglas, MA) led the RIC offense with a
3-for-5, three-RBI, two-run, one double and one stolen base
performance. Junior shortstop Josh Cardoso (Dartmouth, MA)
went 3-for-5 with four runs scored and an RBI single. |

It didn’t take long for RIC to
take a lead as senior designated hitter Jim Connell (Smithfield,
RI) belted a two-run double in the bottom of the first to put
the Anchormen on top, 2-0. |

|
Rhode Island
College put the game away in the third inning, plating five runs on
five hits off of Nighthawk senior starting pitcher David Carroll
(North Providence, RI). Junior right fielder Chris O’Connors
(North Kingstown, RI) smacked a two-run double and Connell stole
home on a delayed steal as part of the outburst. |

Newbury got
on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth as freshman first baseman
Justin Adams (East Providence, RI) plated two with a double. |

|
|
RIC freshman
starting pitcher Rob Rushton (Freetown, MA) settled down
nicely, allowing just one earned run on four hits to go along with
two strikeouts in six innings of work to earn his second (2-0) win
of the season. |

Juniors
Bobby Fournier (Dartmouth, MA), Bruce Celico (Westerly, RI)
and Eric Fama (Wappingers Falls, NY) hurled an inning apiece
over the final three frames. RIC plated four runs in the eighth,
highlighted by freshman right fielder Kevin Martins’ (Freetown,
MA) first collegiate home run (1) with a three-run, opposite
field bomb off of Newbury sophomore reliever
Jamison Torres (Springfield, MA). |

Carroll only
lasted three innings, suffering his third (0-3) loss on the season,
before giving way to Torres for the final five frames. |
|
|
|
In upcoming
action, Rhode Island College will play at doubleheader at Little
East rival UMass Boston on Saturday, Apr. 12 beginning at noon. |
