SWEEP BEACONS
Senior Hurls Complete
Game, While Junior Shortstop
Belts Game-Winning Home Run

Providence, RI—The
Rhode Island College baseball team won game one, 7-0, and took the
nightcap, 3-2, in a sweep of Little East Conference rival UMass
Boston Sunday afternoon at Anchorman Field. |

|
RIC (18-7, 7-1) senior pitcher Eric Thibault (Somerset, MA)
hurled a complete game, five-hit shutout in the opener. He recorded
five strikeouts, while posting a no-hitter through the first five
innings to earn his team-leading fifth (5-1) win. Junior third
baseman Jeff Costa (Pawtucket, RI) did the damage
offensively, going 4-for-6 with two runs scored. Senior second
baseman Pete Olson (North Providence, RI) and junior catcher
Jordan Amorin (Swansea, MA) drove in two runs apiece. UMass
Boston (11-13, 3-3) senior starting pitcher Nick Conway (Methuen,
MA) lasted only four innings, allowing five runs on six hits,
while striking out six in a losing (3-2) effort. |

Game two was a tight affair as
RIC junior shortstop Josh Cardoso (Dartmouth, MA) snapped a
2-2 tie with his fourth home run of the season off UMB sophomore
starting pitcher Mike Andriano (Massapequa, NY). Cardoso went
2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI. Amorin posted another solid
outing from the dish, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Andriano took the
loss (1-2), allowing three runs on five hits to go along with six
strikeouts in a complete game effort. RIC freshman starting pitcher
Gary Levesque (East Providence, RI) threw six strong innings,
allowing no earned runs on four hits, while striking out eight.
Senior reliever Evan Grogan (East Lyme, CT) earned his fourth
(4-0) win, while junior closer Eric Fama (Wappingers Falls, NY)
hurled a scoreless ninth to pick up his fifth save. UMB junior
designated hitter Eric Salvador (Middleboro, MA) went 3-for-4
with an RBI. |

In
upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Elms tomorrow
night for a 7:30 game, while the Beacons will play at Babson on
Wednesday, Apr. 16. |
