ANCHORWOMEN DEFEAT KEENE STATE,
5-3
Win Sets Up a Showdown With Top-Seeded Eastern Connecticut
|

Willimantic, CT—Second-seeded
Rhode Island College defeated fourth-seeded Keene State, 5-3, in
second round action of the 2008 Little East Conference Softball
Tournament Thursday afternoon at Spector Field. The Anchorwomen will
face top-seeded Eastern Connecticut in a battle of undefeated (2-0)
squads in tourney action at 8 p.m. this evening. The Warriors swept
a doubleheader from RIC this past Saturday to clinch a share of the
LEC Regular Season Championship and earn the right to host the
conference tournament. |

RIC improves
to 31-7, while the Owls fall to 23-11. Keene State is forced to play
an elimination game against sixth-seeded Plymouth State immediately
following its loss to the Anchorwomen. |

|
Rhode Island
College took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as junior left fielder
Kelli McCartin (Cranston, RI) singled, advanced on an error
to second and later scored on sophomore shortstop Kelsey Souza’s
(Braintree, MA) hard shot to first base that was misplayed. |

|
|
The
Anchorwomen built a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth as freshman
second baseman Amanda Perry (New Bedford, MA) and classmate
right fielder Donielle Mattoon (Coventry, RI) each scored on
throwing errors. |

|
|
The Owls pulled within one run,
3-2, in the home half of the fourth as junior center fielder
Allie D’Amato (Bristol, CT) plated two with a single to right
field. |
|
|
|
RIC added insurance runs in the
top of the sixth as sophomore designated player Michelle Perrin
(Saugus, MA) belted a two-run single up the middle. KSC scored
one run in the sixth, but could not close the gap. |

Freshman pitcher Melanie Neece
(Westfield, MA) and sophomore Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY)
earned the win (17-3) and save (2), respectively, for the second
straight day. Neece allowed two runs on eight hits in five innings
of work before giving way to Deveines in the sixth. |

|
|
Keene State senior Ashlee
Nicholson (Swanzey, NH) was saddled with the loss (13-5),
allowing five runs, three of which were earned, on nine hits to go
along with seven strikeouts. |
|
|
|
RIC senior first baseman
Christie Lotti (Waterford, CT) went 2-for-4 with one run scored. |
