PANTHERS EDGE ANCHORWOMEN, 85-82, IN DOUBLE OT
KNOTT SCORES CAREER-HIGH 23 IN LOSING EFFORT |
Plymouth, NH— Rhode Island College sophomore forward Jenn
Knott (Narragansett, RI) scored a career-high 23 points, but the
Anchorwomen lost in double overtime, 85-82, at Plymouth State
Saturday afternoon at Foley Gymnasium. |
The
Anchorwomen fall to 7-5 overall and 1-2 in the Little East
Conference. The Panthers even their record at 6-6 overall and 1-2 in
league play. |
Plymouth
State junior Kayla Morin (Pascoag, RI) hit the game-winning
three-point basket with 10 seconds remaining in the second overtime
to snap a 82-82 tie and send the Panthers off with a win. |
Morin led the
Panthers with 23 points, making 10-of-20 field goal attempts in the
game. She also finished with six rebounds and four assists.
Freshman Amanda Kania (Manchester, NH) added her
second double-double of the season, contributing 20 points and 10
rebounds. |
Also reaching
double digits in the scoring department for PSU were senior Meg
MacDonald (Salem, NH) with 14 points and seven assists,
and sophomore Karly Gray (Southampton, MA) with 13
points. Senior Lauren Daniels (Concord, NH) collected
a game-high 14 rebounds. |
The outcome
spoiled a strong performance by Knott, who made 9-of-10 shot
attempts. Senior guard Sarah Coughlin (North Attleboro,
MA) added 15 points and seven assists, and junior guard
Michelle McNamee (Cranston, RI) chipped in with 12 points off
the bench. |
It was a
close game the entire 50 minutes. There were eight lead changes and
seven ties in the first half, with PSU’s biggest lead a 19-13
advantage with eight minutes remaining, and RIC’s largest margin at
halftime, 29-26. There were six more lead changes and seven ties in
the second half, with neither team leading by more than five points,
and it was deadlocked at 67-67 at the end of regulation. |
RIC held the
lead most of the first overtime, but not by more than one
possession. Kania forced a second extra session by making a clutch
free throw with three seconds on the clock. |
It was still
anyone’s game in the second overtime, with each team taking a lead.
RIC trailed by three when sophomore Alice Mullen
(Saunderstown, RI) drained a three-pointer to tie the game at
82-82 with 1:27 to play. After a PSU time-out with 27 seconds to
play, Morin made the key shot to win it for the Panthers, and RIC
couldn’t get the tying basket in the final 10 seconds. |
Both teams
are back in action Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. with LEC contests, PSU
visiting UMass Boston and RIC traveling to league-leading Southern
Maine. |
