WARRIORS SURGE PAST ANCHORWOMEN, 67-35 |
Providence, RI—Eastern
Connecticut defeated Rhode Island College, 67-35, in a Little East
Conference women’s basketball contest Saturday afternoon at The
Murray Center. The Warriors improve their record to 14-1 overall and
4-1 in the LEC, while the Anchorwomen fall to 7-7 overall and 1-4 in
league play. RIC is currently in the midst of a season-high
three-game losing streak. |
Neither team
shot the ball well for much of the first half. The Warriors snapped
a 10-10 tie on a junior guard Christina Amato (Marlboro, MA)
three-pointer with 6:33 left, which opened up the floodgates
offensively for ECSU. Eastern Connecticut outscored the Anchorwomen,
23-5, over the final six minutes to open up a 33-15 halftime
advantage. |
Things went
from bad to worse for RIC in the second stanza as the Warriors
cruised to a 32-point victory. Eastern Connecticut outrebounded the
Anchorwomen by 21, 47-26, and held RIC to 26 percent (13-for-51)
shooting from the field. The Anchorwomen could not find any rhythm
from behind the three-point arc, connecting on only two of 12 (17
percent) in the loss. |
Twelve
different Warriors scored at least one point and Head Coach
Denise Bierly was able to play all 15 players on her roster.
Senior forward Stephanie Smith (Penacook, NH) scored 10 of
her game-high 14 points in the second half, while also recording
seven rebounds and two steals. |
Junior center
Ashley McFetridge (Canton, CT) logged 10 points, eight
rebounds, three steals and one block in just 22 minutes. Junior
guard Nicky Morey (Columbia, CT) contributed 13 points, four
rebounds, three assists and three steals in 26 minutes. |
Rhode Island
College sophomore forward Jenn Knott (Narragansett, RI) and
junior guard Michelle McNamee (Cranston, RI) accounted for 22
of the Anchorwomen’s 35 points with 11 apiece. |
