Coughlin’s Career-High 11 Assists Helps RIC Win Second Straight LEC

Boston, MA—The
Rhode
Island College women’s basketball team won its second consecutive
Little East Conference game, downing UMass Boston, 69-57, to improve
to 9-7 overall and 3-4 in league play on Saturday afternoon at the
Clark Athletic Center. The Beacons suffer their fourth straight
loss, and third consecutive LEC defeat, to fall to 6-10 overall and
1-6 in the conference. |

RIC, which led wire-to-wire, scored the first six points of the game
and opened up a 9-2 advantage on a three-pointer by sophomore guard
Alice Mullen (Saunderstown, RI) with 16:39 left in the first
half. The Beacons cut the Anchorwomen advantage down to five points,
17-12, with 12:48 remaining on a trey by a senior guard Ashley
Greene (Brookline, MA). Rhode Island College then went on a 17-8
run to build a game-high 16 point lead, 34-18, on a sophomore
forward Jenn Knott (Narragansett, RI) layup at the 4:59 mark
and went into halftime up by 12, 38-26. |

The Beacons whittled the RIC lead down to seven points on two
occasions in the second stanza, but were unable to close the gap.
Rhode Island College senior point guard Sarah Coughlin (North
Attleboro, MA) dished out a career-high 11 assists, including
six first-half helpers, en route to logging her first career
double-double with 10 points, seven boards and seven steals. |

Junior guard Tyla Martin (Cumberland, RI) contributed a
game-high 18 points to go along with six boards, five steals and
four assists. Senior forward Sherri Heard (Coventry, RI)
posted 11 points, seven boards and a game-high two blocks. Knott
added 10 points, four boards and four steals. Mullen missed the
double-digit scoring club by one with a nine-point effort. |

Greene and senior guard Myrna Tangar (Randolph, MA) were the
lone bright spots for the Beacons. Greene scored 12 points, while
Tangar grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds. UMB shot just 27 percent
(15-for-56) from the field, while the Anchorwomen countered with a
48 percent (28-for-58) mark. |

The Beacons
turned the ball over 28 times, while RIC forced 18 steals. |
|
|
|
In upcoming
action, Rhode Island College will play at Western Connecticut, while
UMass Boston will travel to UMass Dartmouth, on Tuesday, Jan. 29 for
a 5:30 p.m. tip-off. |
