13 Southern Maine improved its record to 21-2 overall and 11-1 in
the Little East Conference in a 70-51 victory over Rhode Island
College in collegiate women’s basketball action on Saturday
afternoon at The Murray Center. RIC falls to 12-10 overall and 5-7
in league action. |

As in the first meeting between the two clubs, Rhode
Island College kept the game close in the first half. The
Anchorwomen took a five-point lead, 19-14, on a senior forward
Sherri Heard (Coventry, RI) layup with 10:39 left in the opening
stanza. The Huskies responded with an 8-2 run to take the lead,
22-21, on a senior forward Angela Sante Fe (Derry, NH) layup
at the 7:47 mark. USM increased the lead to eight points, 31-23, on
a layup by sophomore guard Nicole Paradis (Skowhegan, ME)
with 1:32 left, until RIC bounced back with two Heard free throws
and a sophomore guard Alice Mullen (Saunderstown, RI)
three-pointer to end the half down by four, 31-27. |

The Huskies immediately took charge in the second
half, going on a 12-2 run to put the game out of reach. Southern
Maine built a game-high 21-point advantage, 70-49, on a junior guard
Trisha MacDonald (Millinocket, ME) three-pointer with 30
seconds left in regulation. RIC never got closer than 11 points
during the final 20 minutes. |

Southern Maine junior forward Stacey Kent
(Northwood, NH) scored 11 of her 18 points in the first half,
finishing with a game-high 12 rebounds to post a double-double.
Sante Fe totaled 11 of her game-high 19 points in the second stanza
to finish with four rebounds and two assists. Senior forward
Shannon Kynoch (South Burlington, VT) logged six points, seven
boards, four assists, four steals and two blocks, while senior
forward and former Anchorwoman Josalee Danieli (New Gloucester,
ME) rounded out the Husky contingent in double figures with 11
points and eight rebounds. |

RIC junior guard Tyla Martin (Cumberland, RI)
posted 15 points and four rebounds, while Heard logged 10 points and
three boards. |

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host
Western Connecticut on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m. It will be
Senior Night as Sarah Coughlin (North Attleboro, MA) and
Heard will be honored prior to the start of the game. |
