COSTA’S OVERTIME MARKER
SINKS COAST GUARD

Providence, RI—Freshman
forward Bruno Costa (Pawtucket, RI) scored the “Golden Goal”
in the 102nd minute to lift Rhode Island College to a
3-2, double overtime victory against Coast Guard in collegiate men’s
soccer action on Tuesday evening. |

The Bears
were whistled for a foul deep in their own territory and the
Anchormen were awarded a free kick. After the initial kick, Coast
Guard knocked the ball out of the box to RIC senior midfielder
Brandon Migliore (Coventry, RI) who lofted the ball on to
Costa’s head for the decisive score. |

|
Rhode Island
College (3-3-1) is unbeaten in its last four games (3-0-1) with
Costa recording nine points (3-3-9) over that time span. In the
Anchormen’s past three contests, he has netted a pair of
game-winning goal, while also notching a game-tying tally. |

For the
second game in a row, RIC was forced to come from behind twice.
Coast Guard (4-2) senior forward Thomas Cameron (Portland, OR)
intercepted a RIC clearing pass and blasted a rocket from 25 yards
out that beat freshman goalkeeper Justin O’Connor (North
Kingstown, RI) in the 19th minute to open the
scoring. |

The Bears
thought they had the game-winning tally in the 81st
minute as sophomore forward Nick Devine (Rocky Hill, NJ)
stepped into O’Connor’s goal kick at midfield and walked in all
alone to beat the netminder for the go-ahead goal. |

The Anchormen
would not be denied as sophomore midfielder Mike Diogo (Bristol,
RI) launched a shot from 22 yards out in the 87th
minute that eluded CGA junior goalkeeper Tim Olah (Glastonbury,
CT) and forced an extra session. |

Olah (4-1)
suffers his first loss of the season with a six-save effort.
O’Connor (2-2-1) made seven stops to earn the victory. |

The Anchormen
outshot the Bears, 24-16, in the game. |

In upcoming
action, Rhode Island College will open the Little East Conference
circuit at UMass Boston on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. |
