DIOGO AND O’CONNOR EARN WEEKLY LITTLE EAST ACCOLADES

 

Providence, RI—The Little East Conference honored Rhode Island College freshman goalkeeper Justin O’Connor (North Kingstown, RI) and sophomore midfielder Mike Diogo (Bristol, RI) for their performance in men’s soccer this past week.

 

O’Connor was named the Little East Conference Men’s Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week, recording a pair of shutouts to post a 1-0-1 record with a 0.00 GAA and a 1.000 saves percentage. On Sept. 23, he made six stops in a 0-0 double overtime tie at Bridgewater State. Four days later, O’Connor stopped all five shots he faced to backstop the Anchormen to a 1-0 Little East Conference victory at UMass Dartmouth, extending Rhode Island College’s unbeaten streak to seven matches. For the season, he has played in eight games, starting six of them. O’Connor is 4-2-2 with four shutouts, a 0.79 goals-against average and a .846 save percentage in 681:47 of action.

Diogo was named the Little East Conference Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week. He notched his first collegiate game-winning goal against Little East Conference foe UMass Dartmouth on Sept. 27. Diogo cracked the scoring column in the ninth minute with his third tally of the campaign to post the lone goal of the match. For the season, he has played in 10 games, starting six of them. He is second on the club in goals (three) and points (6).

Head Coach John Mello’s team is currently 5-3-2 overall and 2-0 in the Little East. In upcoming action, RIC will host LEC rival Western Connecticut on Saturday, Oct. 4.
