HAUGHEY’S GOAL LEADS TO, 1-1,
DOUBLE OVERTIME TIE

Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College sophomore forward Kristina Haughey (Lincoln, RI)
scored the game-tying goal in the 68th minute as UMass
Dartmouth and the Anchorwomen played to a 1-1, double overtime tie
in Little East Conference women’s soccer action at the RIC Soccer
Field on Thursday afternoon. |

Haughey stole the ball and launched a
shot from 22-yards out to equalize the game. The tie stops an
eight-game losing streak for the Anchorwomen, who are now 1-9-1
overall and 0-1-1 in the LEC. The Corsairs played to a 1-1, double
overtime tie for the third time in their last four games. UMD is now
1-3-3 overall and 0-1-1 in the league. |

Despite carrying play for much of the first half, RIC
found itself in a hole with just five second remaining in the first
stanza. Sophomore forward Cristal Peixoto (Dartmouth, MA)
crossed the ball from the goal line and after a save, the ball
trickled to freshman forward Katie Doherty (Tewksbury, MA)
who scored her first collegiate marker. |

The Anchorwomen had several chances to take the lead
in the final 25 minutes, as both Haughey and sophomore forward
Chelsea Creamer (Coventry, RI) were foiled on breakaway
opportunities. |

|
UMass Dartmouth quietly outshot RIC,
22-16, and held a decisive advantage in corner kicks, 11-5.

|
|
|
Both teams nearly ended the game in
overtime, as RIC senior defender Kayla Fleming (Pawtucket, RI)
hit the post in the 98th minute, while Corsair
sophomore midfielder Jessica Swenson (Salem, MA) had her shot
was tipped over the crossbar by RIC sophomore netminder Maddie
Pirri (Bristol, RI) in the 107th minute. |

UMD sophomore goalkeeper Tanya
Braga (Hudson, MA) made 9 saves, as her record now stands at
1-2-3. Pirri made 12 saves as her mark goes to 1-9-1. It is the
third game in a row that Pirri has been forced to make a
double-digit effort in saves. |

|
|
In upcoming action, Rhode Island
College will play at No. 23 Western Connecticut on Saturday, Oct. 4. |
