Rhode Island College Winter Sports Update #5

Men’s Basketball
(1-18 Overall, 0-8 in the Little East)

Providence, RI—Head Coach Mike Kelly’s Anchormen are 1-18 overall and 0-8 in the Little East Conference. RIC dropped all four of its games last week, all of which were against Little East competition. The Anchormen fell 94-51 against Western Connecticut on Jan. 15, 87-39 against Keene State on Jan. 17, 78-59 against Eastern Connecticut on Jan. 19 and 90-52 against UMASS-Dartmouth on Jan. 22.

Freshman forward Kevin Payette (Woonsocket, RI) has played in 19 games, starting 14 of them. He is averaging 8.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.2 steals per game.

Freshman forward Jason Harris (Bedford, MA) has played in 19 games, starting 14 of them. He is averaging 9.4 points, 6.6 rebounds and 0.8 steals per game.

Junior guard Eric Britto (Riverside, RI) has played in 19 games, starting ten of them. He is averaging 8.3 points, 1.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 0.9 steals per game.

Sophomore center Kurt Gorter (North Kingstown, RI) has played in ten games, starting eight of them. He is averaging 7.1 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.

Junior guard James Heady (Bridgeport, CT) has played in 19 games, starting eight of them. He is averaging 6.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game.

Sophomore forward Mike Costigan (Pawtucket, RI) has played in 19 games, starting 16 of them. He is averaging 5.1 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.

Freshman guard Greg Bushey (Hudson, NH) has played in 14 games. He is averaging 4.9 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.

Freshman forward Ian Robertson (Naugatuck, CT) has played in 19 games, starting 14 of them. He is averaging 3.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.

Senior guard Mike Monahan (Johnston, RI) has played in 14 games. He is averaging 2.1 points and 0.9 rebounds per game.

Freshman forward Raleigh Brennan (Middletown, RI) has played in 16 games, starting one of them. He is averaging 2.2 points and 1.9 rebounds per game.

Sophomore forward Matt Records (East Greenwich, RI) has played in 14 games. He is averaging 3.8 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.

Sophomore guard Bobby Carroll (Fairfield, CT) has played in five games. He is averaging 2.8 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.

In upcoming action, RIC will host UMASS-Boston on Saturday, Jan. 26.

Women’s Basketball

(3-15 Overall, 1-7 in the Little East)

Head Coach Mike Kelley’s team is 3-15 overall and 1-7 in the Little East Conference. RIC went 1-2 this week, picking up its first Little East Conference win of the season. RIC defeated UMASS-Dartmouth 66-64 on Jan. 22, ending a ten-game losing streak. The Anchorwomen fell earlier in the week to Western Connecticut 62-45 on Jan. 15 and 99-45 against Eastern Connecticut on Jan. 19.

Sophomore forward Elizabeth Shields (Warwick, RI) has played in 18 games, starting all of them. She is averaging 9.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.0 blocks and 1.7 steals per game.

Sophomore guard Monyca Vickers (Mattapoisett, MA) has played in 12 games, starting seven of them. Vickers is averaging 6.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

Sophomore guard Katie Hansen (Narragansett, RI) has played in 18 games, starting 17 of them. She is averaging 8.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.7 steals per game.

Senior forward Melanie Wolf (Gorham, NH) has played in 18 games, starting all of them. The co-captain is averaging 2.9 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.

Sophomore guard Angela Sarette (Putnam, CT) has played in 18 games, starting eight of them. She is averaging 10.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game.

Sophomore guard Tara Mekuto (Providence, RI) has played in 17 games, starting three of them. She is averaging 2.5 points and 1.9 rebounds per game.

Freshman guard Becca Bissonnette (Danielson, CT) has played in 18 games, starting all of them. She is averaging 6.7 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. Bissonnette grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds in the win over UMASS-Dartmouth.

Sophomore guard Abby Ferri (Greene, RI) has played in 18 games, starting one of them. She is averaging 3.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.7 steals per game.

Junior guard Pamela Kelly (West Hartford, CT) has played in 17 games. The co-captain is averaging 1.3 points and 1.1 rebounds per game.

Junior guard Alicia Hersperger (Providence, RI) has played in 11 games. She is averaging 1.0 rebounds per game.

Freshman forward Elizabeth Valeika (Woonsocket, RI) has played in eight games.

In upcoming action, RIC will host UMASS-Boston on Saturday, Jan. 26.

Wrestling

(6-9 overall; 4-3 in the NECCWA; 0-0 in the Pilgrim League)

Head Coach Jay Jones’ Anchormen are 6-9 overall and 4-3 in the New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA). RIC has yet to see action in the Pilgrim Wrestling League.

RIC has won its last four matches. The Anchormen lost to Norwich at the New England Duals, held on Jan. 19, 26-18 before coming back to defeat their next three opponents. RIC defeated Springfield 29-12, Western New England 42-3 and Williams 42-10 to win the consolation bracket RIC continued its winning streak with a 27-10 win over Western New England in dual meet action on Jan. 22.

Junior Mike Riley (Lowell, MA) is currently ranked number one in New England at 133 pounds. The co-captain is 29-4 at 133 pounds with 124 points, 93 takedowns, ten reversals, 37 escapes, 14 near-falls and three wins by fall on the year. Riley is currently riding an 18-match winning streak. He has not lost since the championship match of the Scranton Invitational on Dec. 1.

Freshman Justin Deveau (North Attleboro, MA) is ranked sixth in New England. He is 21-10 at 197 pounds with 95 points, 27 takedowns, ten reversals, 25 escapes, eight near-falls and five wins by fall on the year.

Sophomore Walter Borden (East Providence, RI) is 7-13 at 165 and 174 pounds with 35 points, 11 takedowns, eight reversals, 28 escapes, seven near-falls and seven wins by fall on the year.

Sophomore Gerard D’Arezzo (Cranston, RI) is 4-14 at 184 and 285 pounds with 21 points, six takedowns, one reversal, 30 escapes, one near-fall and two wins by fall on the year.

Sophomore Luke Emmons (West Greenwich, RI) is 16-12 at 141 pounds with 75 points, 24 takedowns, 12 reversals, 19 escapes, six near-falls and seven wins by fall on the year.

Freshman Eddy German (Providence, RI) is 3-4 at 125 pounds with 12 points, five takedowns and nine escapes on the year.

Freshman Jordan Goor (Lowell, MA) is 6-16 at 285 pounds with 24 points, four takedowns, five reversals, 18 escapes and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Matt Kelly (Carver, MA) is 5-8 at 141 and 149 pounds with 24 points, six takedowns, two reversals, 17 escapes, six near-falls and two wins by fall on the year.

Freshman Andre LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) is 2-5 at 184, 197 and 285 pounds with nine points, three takedowns, two reversals, nine escapes and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Gerard LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) is 7-16 at 165 and 174 pounds with 28 points, 14 takedowns, 17 reversals, 39 escapes, eight near-falls and two wins by fall on the year.

Senior Chad Lampert (Georgetown, MA) is 7-10 at 141 and 149 pounds with 29 points, 21 takedowns, four reversals, 26 escapes, five near-falls and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Mike LoSasso (Riverside, RI) is 1-3 at 149 pounds with four takedowns, two reversals, one escape, two near-falls and one win by fall on the year.

Senior Mike Penza (Cranston, RI) is 3-5 at 157 and 165 pounds with 18 points, one reversal, 15 escapes, one near-fall and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Tim Robblee (Wakefield, MA) is 4-12 at 157 and 174 pounds with 14 points, ten takedowns, four reversals, 13 escapes and eight near-falls on the year.

Freshman Mike Skaling (Greene, RI) is 1-11 at 157 pounds with three points, five takedowns and 15 escapes on the year.

Freshman Amos Traystman (Montville, CT) is 6-6 at 125 pounds with 30 points, four takedowns, two reversals and seven escapes on the year.

Freshman Mike Vieira (Narragansett, RI) is 4-8 at 125 and 133 pounds with 21 points, five takedowns, four reversals, five escapes and two wins by fall on the year.

In upcoming action, the Anchormen will compete in a tri-meet with New Hampshire and Southern Maine at USM on Saturday, Jan. 26.

Women’s Gymnastics

(0-2 Overall; 0-0 in the ECAC)

Head Coach Nicole Follett Pannone’s Anchorwomen are currently 0-2 overall and 0-0 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference.

RIC took part in the SUNY-Brockport Invitational on Jan. 19. The Anchorwomen placed fourth (five teams) on the day with a score of 161.750.

Senior captain Kristen Oliver (Bristol, RI) is averaging scores of 8.350 on vault, 6.600 on bars, 8.567 on beam, 8.858 on floor and 32.375 in the all-around.

Junior captain Shannon Hughey (Warwick, RI) is averaging scores of 8.717 on vault, 8.367 on bars, 8.208 on beam, 8.892 on floor and 34.183 in the all-around.

Sophomore Nikki Longo (Raynham, MA) is averaging scores of 8.558 on vault, 8.091 on bars, 8.800 on beam, 8.367 on floor and 33.817 in the all-around.

Sophomore Nicole Simone (Johnston, RI) is averaging 7.783 on beam and 7.550 on floor.

Sophomore Nicki Turner (Salem, NH) is averaging scores of 8.150 on vault, 6.925 on bars and 8.300 on floor.

Freshman Caren Normandin (Fall River, MA) is averaging scores of 8.667 on vault, 8.233 on bars, 8.758 on beam, 8.817 on floor and 34.475 in the all-around.

Freshman Ashley O’Blenis (Bristol, RI) is averaging scores of 8.167 on vault, 7.433 on bars, 7.933 on beam, 8.650 on floor and 32.183 in the all-around.

Freshmen Ashley Bard (North Smithfield, RI) and Lauren Brennan (Barrington, RI) have yet to see action for the Anchorwomen this season

RIC’s next meet will be at Ursinus on Jan. 25. The following day RIC will compete in a tri-meet against MIT at Wilson.

Men’s Indoor Track & Field

Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s Anchormen competed at the Brandeis Invitational on Jan. 19. The team finished 13^th (16 teams) on the day with ten points.

Senior co-captain Chris Puleo (Barrington, RI) placed 20^th with a time of 24.93 in the 200 meters at the Brandeis Invitational. He placed 21^st in the 400 meters with a time of 54.70 at the same meet.

Junior Brian Carney (Barrington, RI) placed 30^th in the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.75 at the Brandeis Invitational. He placed 18^th in the long jump with a leap of 5.20 meters at the same meet.

Junior Joseph Padykula (Seekonk, MA) placed 19^th in the shot put with a throw of 11.04 meters at the Brandeis Invitational. He placed 15^th in the weight throw with a throw of 9.93 meters at the same meet.

Sophomore co-captain Tim Rudd (Warwick, RI) placed first in the 1000 meters with a time of 2:34.19 at the Brandeis Invitational.

Freshman Chris Fernandes (Cumberland, RI) placed 26^th in the 200 meters with a time of 25.46 at the Brandeis Invitational.

Freshman Joe Parenteau (Smithfield, RI) placed 20^th in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:26.89 at the Brandeis Invitational.

In upcoming action, the Anchormen will compete at Southern Maine Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 26.

Women’s Indoor Track & Field

Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s Anchorwomen competed at the Brandeis Invitational on Jan. 19. The team finished 12^th (16 teams) on the day with 17.0 points.

Sophomore Courtney Gardiner (Warwick, RI) placed 16^th in the 200 meters with a time of 30.56 at the Brandeis Invitational.

Sophomore captain Joanne Pora (Attleboro, MA) placed 15^th in the shot put with a throw of 8.83 meters at the Brandeis Invitational. She placed sixth in the weight throw with a throw of 11.41 meters at the same meet.

Freshman Shari Fenton (West Warwick, RI) placed 20^th in the shot put with a throw of 8.51 meters at the Brandeis Invitational. She placed 14^th in the weight throw with a throw of 9.58 meters at the same meet.

Freshman Rolanda Mangum (Providence, RI) placed third in the weight throw with a throw of 13.38 meters at the Brandeis Invitational.

Freshman Katherine McCalligett (Warwick, RI) placed fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 27.66, third in the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.80.

In upcoming action, the Anchorwomen will compete at the Southern Maine Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 26.
