Rhode Island College Winter Sports Update #6

Men’s Basketball
(1-19 Overall, 0-9 in the Little East)

Providence, RI—Head Coach Mike Kelly’s Anchormen are 1-19 overall and 0-9 in the Little East Conference. RIC lost to UMASS-Boston 89-67 on Saturday Jan. 26. The Anchormen were trailing by just six points at the half but UMB outscored the Anchormen 48-32 in the second half to take the win.

Freshman forward Kevin Payette (Woonsocket, RI) has played in 20 games, starting 15 of them. He is averaging 9.1 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.1 steals per game.

Freshman forward Jason Harris (Bedford, MA) has played in 20 games, starting 15 of them. He is averaging 9.4 points, 6.7 rebounds and 0.8 steals per game.

Junior guard Eric Britto (Riverside, RI) has played in 20 games, starting 11 of them. He is averaging 8.6 points, 1.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 0.9 steals per game.

Sophomore center Kurt Gorter (North Kingstown, RI) has played in 11 games, starting nine of them. He is averaging 6.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.

Junior guard James Heady (Bridgeport, CT) has played in 19 games, starting eight of them. He is averaging 6.3 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game.

Sophomore forward Mike Costigan (Pawtucket, RI) has played in 20 games, starting 17 of them. He is averaging 5.1 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.

Freshman guard Greg Bushey (Hudson, NH) has played in 15 games. He is averaging 4.8 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game.

Freshman forward Ian Robertson (Naugatuck, CT) has played in 20 games, starting 14 of them. He is averaging 3.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.

Senior guard Mike Monahan (Johnston, RI) has played in 15 games. He is averaging 2.0 points and 0.9 rebounds per game.

Freshman forward Raleigh Brennan (Middletown, RI) has played in 17 games, starting one of them. He is averaging 2.1 points and 1.9 rebounds per game.

Sophomore forward Matt Records (East Greenwich, RI) has played in 15 games. He is averaging 3.7 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.

Sophomore guard Bobby Carroll (Fairfield, CT) has played in six games. He is averaging 4.3 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.

In upcoming action, RIC will play at Keene State on Saturday, Feb. 2.

Women’s Basketball

(3-16 Overall, 1-8 in the Little East)

Head Coach Mike Kelley’s team is 3-16 overall and 1-8 in the Little East Conference. RIC lost to UMASS-Boston 59-34 on Saturday Jan. 26. The Anchorwomen were coming off their first LEC win of the season that ended a ten-game losing streak. RIC remains in last place in the LEC after the loss to UMB.

Sophomore forward Elizabeth Shields (Warwick, RI) has played in 19 games, starting all of them. She is averaging 9.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.0 blocks and 1.6 steals per game.

Sophomore guard Monyca Vickers (Mattapoisett, MA) has played in 13 games, starting seven of them. Vickers is averaging 6.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

Sophomore guard Katie Hansen (Narragansett, RI) has played in 19 games, starting 18 of them. She is averaging 8.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.6 steals per game.

Senior forward Melanie Wolf (Gorham, NH) has played in 19 games, starting all of them. The co-captain is averaging 2.8 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.

Sophomore guard Angela Sarette (Putnam, CT) has played in 19 games, starting nine of them. She is averaging 9.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game.

Sophomore guard Tara Mekuto (Providence, RI) has played in 18 games, starting three of them. She is averaging 2.3 points and 1.9 rebounds per game.

Freshman guard Becca Bissonnette (Danielson, CT) has played in 19 games, starting all of them. She is averaging 6.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.

Sophomore guard Abby Ferri (Greene, RI) has played in 19 games, starting one of them. She is averaging 3.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game.

Junior guard Pamela Kelly (West Hartford, CT) has played in 18 games. The co-captain is averaging 1.4 points and 1.0 rebounds per game.

Junior guard Alicia Hersperger (Providence, RI) has played in 12 games. She is averaging 1.0 rebounds per game.

Freshman forward Elizabeth Valeika (Woonsocket, RI) has played in nine games.

In upcoming action, RIC will host Emerson on Wednesday Jan. 30 and play at Keene State on Saturday, Feb. 2.

Wrestling

(7-9 overall; 5-3 in the NECCWA; 0-0 in the Pilgrim League)

Head Coach Jay Jones’ Anchormen are 7-9 overall and 5-3 in the New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA). The Anchormen are ranked tenth in New England as a team. RIC has yet to see action in the Pilgrim Wrestling League.

The Anchormen traveled to Southern Maine on Saturday Jan. 26 and defeated the Huskies 30-11. RIC is currently on a five-match winning streak.

Freshman Amos Traystman (Montville, CT) was named the Pilgrim League’s Co-Rookie of the Week after winning both of his matches last week. Traystman is 8-6 at 125 pounds with 36 points, nine takedowns, two reversals and nine escapes on the year.

Junior Mike Riley (Lowell, MA) is currently ranked number one in New England at 133 pounds. The co-captain is 29-4 at 133 pounds with 124 points, 93 takedowns, ten reversals, 37 escapes, 14 near-falls and three wins by fall on the year. Riley is currently riding an 18-match winning streak. He has not lost since the championship match of the Scranton Invitational on Dec. 1. Riley has missed the club’s last two matches while battling the flu.

Freshman Justin Deveau (North Attleboro, MA) is ranked sixth in New England. He is 23-10 at 197 pounds with 105 points, 30 takedowns, 11 reversals, 25 escapes, eight near-falls and six wins by fall on the year.

Sophomore Walter Borden (East Providence, RI) is 12-15 at 165 and 174 pounds with 64 points, 28 takedowns, ten reversals, 35 escapes, seven near-falls and six wins by fall on the year.

Sophomore Gerard D’Arezzo (Cranston, RI) is 5-15 at 184 and 285 pounds with 25 points, nine takedowns, one reversal, 34 escapes, one near-fall and two wins by fall on the year.

Sophomore Luke Emmons (West Greenwich, RI) is 18-12 at 141 pounds with 83 points, 28 takedowns, 14 reversals, 19 escapes, nine near-falls and seven wins by fall on the year.

Freshman Eddy German (Providence, RI) is 3-4 at 125 pounds with 12 points, five takedowns and nine escapes on the year.

Freshman Jordan Goor (Lowell, MA) is 8-16 at 285 pounds with 36 points, four takedowns, five reversals, 18 escapes and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Matt Kelly (Carver, MA) is 5-8 at 141 and 149 pounds with 24 points, six takedowns, two reversals, 17 escapes, six near-falls and two wins by fall on the year.

Freshman Andre LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) is 2-5 at 184, 197 and 285 pounds with nine points, three takedowns, two reversals, nine escapes and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Gerard LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) is 7-18 at 165 and 174 pounds with 28 points, 14 takedowns, 17 reversals, 42 escapes, eight near-falls and two wins by fall on the year.

Senior Chad Lampert (Georgetown, MA) is 7-12 at 141 and 149 pounds with 29 points, 22 takedowns, four reversals, 28 escapes, five near-falls and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Mike LoSasso (Riverside, RI) is 1-3 at 149 pounds with four takedowns, two reversals, one escape, two near-falls and one win by fall on the year.

Senior Mike Penza (Cranston, RI) is 3-5 at 157 and 165 pounds with 18 points, one reversal, 15 escapes, one near-fall and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Tim Robblee (Wakefield, MA) is 4-12 at 157 and 174 pounds with 14 points, ten takedowns, four reversals, 13 escapes and eight near-falls on the year.

Freshman Mike Skaling (Greene, RI) is 3-11 at 157 pounds with nine points, nine takedowns and 19 escapes on the year.

Freshman Mike Vieira (Narragansett, RI) is 4-10 at 125 and 133 pounds with 21 points, five takedowns, four reversals, nine escapes and two wins by fall on the year.

In upcoming action, the Anchormen will compete at MIT on Wednesday, Jan. 30 and at Roger Williams for a tri-meet against RWU and Southern Maine on Saturday, Feb 2.

Women’s Gymnastics

(0-4 Overall; 0-2 in the ECAC)

Head Coach Nicole Follett Pannone’s Anchorwomen are currently 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference.

RIC saw its first action in the ECAC this week against MIT and Ursinus. The Anchorwomen lost to Ursinus 182.100-173.325 and MIT 174.100-173.325, on Friday, Jan. 25. RIC also competed in the Wilson Invitational on Saturday Jan. 26, facing MIT, SUNY-Brockport and Wilson. The Anchorwomen placed second with a score of 173.175.

Senior captain Kristen Oliver (Bristol, RI) broke her left foot at the Wilson Invitational and is out indefinitely. Oliver was averaging scores of 8.460 on vault, 6.600 on bars, 8.567 on beam, 8.835 on floor and 32.950 in the all-around.

Sophomore Nicki Turner (Salem, NH) is out indefinitely after tearing her left ACL over Christmas Break. Turner was averaging scores of 8.150 on vault, 6.925 on bars and 8.300 on floor.

Junior captain Shannon Hughey (Warwick, RI) is averaging scores of 8.645 on vault, 8.560 on bars, 8.435 on beam, 8.835 on floor and 34.475 in the all-around.

Sophomore Nikki Longo (Raynham, MA) is averaging scores of 8.605 on vault, 8.385 on bars, 8.915 on beam, 8.425 on floor and 34.330 in the all-around.

Sophomore Nicole Simone (Johnston, RI) is averaging scores of 6.550 on bars, 7.790 on beam and 7.660 on floor.

Freshman Caren Normandin (Fall River, MA) is averaging scores of 8.875 on vault, 8.255 on bars, 8.935 on beam, 8.745 on floor and 34.810 in the all-around.

Freshman Ashley O’Blenis (Bristol, RI) is averaging scores of 8.360 on vault, 7.620 on bars, 8.250 on beam, 8.695 on floor and 32.925 in the all-around.

Freshmen Ashley Bard (North Smithfield, RI) and Lauren Brennan (Barrington, RI) have yet to see action for the Anchorwomen this season

RIC will host SUNY-Brockport in its next competition on Sunday, Feb. 3.

Men’s Indoor Track & Field

Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s Anchormen competed at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan. 26. The team finished second (four teams) with 103 points on the day.

Senior co-captain Chris Puleo (Barrington, RI) placed first in the 400 meters with a time of 53.82 and third in the 200 meters with a time of 25.19 at the Southern Maine Invitational.

Junior Brian Carney (Barrington, RI) placed first in the long jump with a leap of 17’10.75" and seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 1:03.26 at the Southern Maine Invitational.

Junior Charm Howie (Providence, RI) placed first in the 55 meters with a time of 7.03 and fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 25.36 at the Southern Maine Invitational.

Junior Mike Daniels (Warwick, RI) placed fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:06.44 at the Southern Maine Invitational.

Junior Joseph Padykula (Seekonk, MA) placed third in the weight throw with a distance of 36’01.50" and sixth in the shot with a distance of 35’04.50" at the Southern Maine Invitational.

Sophomore co-captain Tim Rudd (Warwick, RI) placed first in the 800 meters with a time of 1:58.70 and first in the mile with a time of 4:27.88 at the Southern Maine Invitational.

Freshman German Cardona (Pawtucket, RI) placed third in the 55 meters with a time of 7.24 and fifth in the 200 meters with a time of 25.41 at the Southern Maine Invitational.

Freshman Chris Fernandes (Cumberland, RI) placed second in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 9.12 and fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 57.49 at the Southern Maine Invitational.

Freshman Joe Giardina (West Warwick, RI) placed seventh in the 5,000 meters with a time of 20:16.22 at the Southern Maine Invitational.

Freshman Joe Parenteau (Smithfield, RI) placed fifth in the mile with a time of 4:44.19 at the Southern Maine Invitational.

In upcoming action, the Anchormen will compete at the Wheaton Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 2.

Women’s Indoor Track & Field

Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s Anchorwomen competed at the Southern Maine Invitational on Saturday Jan. 26. RIC finished third (six teams) on the day with 43 points.

Sophomore Courtney Gardiner (Warwick, RI) placed fifth in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 10.75 and ninth in the 200 meters with a time of 30.46 at the Southern Maine Invitational.

Sophomore captain Joanne Pora (Attleboro, MA) placed tenth in the shot with a distance of 27’11.00" at the Southern Maine Invitational.

Freshman Shari Fenton (West Warwick, RI) placed fourth in the shot with a distance of 31’00.75" and sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 33’10.50" at the Southern Maine Invitational.

Freshman Jessica Leonard (Warwick, RI) placed fourth in the weight throw with a distance of 38’09.00" and eighth in the shot with a distance of 27’11.00" at the Southern Maine Invitational.

Freshman Rolanda Mangum (Providence, RI) placed second in the weight throw with a distance of 44’09.00" and third in the shot put with a distance of 31’03.25" at the Southern Maine Invitational.

Freshman Katherine McCalligett (Warwick, RI) placed first in the 200 meters with a time of 27.59 and first in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.34 at the Southern Maine Invitational.

In upcoming action, the Anchorwomen will compete at the Wheaton Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 2.
