Rhode Island College Winter Sports Update #8

Men’s Basketball
(1-21 Overall, 0-11 in the Little East)

Providence, RI—Head Coach Mike Kelly’s Anchormen are 1-21 overall and 0-11 in the Little East Conference. RIC went 0-2 this week losing to Western Connecticut 84-61 on Feb. 5 and 84-47 to Southern Maine on Feb. 9. The Anchormen have lost nine straight and have two games remaining in the season.

Freshman forward Kevin Payette (Woonsocket, RI) has played in 23 games, starting 18 of them. He is averaging 8.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 steals per game.

Freshman forward Jason Harris (Bedford, MA) has played in 23 games, starting 18 of them. He is averaging 9.5 points, 6.9 rebounds and 0.8 steals per game.

Junior guard Eric Britto (Riverside, RI) has played in 23 games, starting 14 of them. He is averaging 8.5 points, 1.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 0.9 steals per game.

Sophomore center Kurt Gorter (North Kingstown, RI) has played in 14 games, starting 11 of them. He is averaging 6.5 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.

Junior guard James Heady (Bridgeport, CT) has played in 22 games, starting eight of them. He is averaging 5.5 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.

Sophomore forward Mike Costigan (Pawtucket, RI) has played in 23 games, starting 20 of them. He is averaging 4.6 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.

Freshman guard Greg Bushey (Hudson, NH) has played in 18 games. He is averaging 4.7 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.

Freshman forward Ian Robertson (Naugatuck, CT) has played in 23 games, starting 15 of them. He is averaging 3.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.

Senior guard Mike Monahan (Johnston, RI) has played in 18 games. He is averaging 2.5 points and 0.8 rebounds per game.

Freshman forward Raleigh Brennan (Middletown, RI) has played in 20 games, starting one of them. He is averaging 1.9 points and 1.8 rebounds per game.

Sophomore forward Matt Records (East Greenwich, RI) has played in 18 games. He is averaging 3.6 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.

Sophomore guard Bobby Carroll (Fairfield, CT) has played in nine games. He is averaging 7.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.

In upcoming action, RIC will host UMASS-Dartmouth on Tuesday, Feb. 12 and travel to Plymouth State for its final game of the season on Saturday, Feb. 16.

Women’s Basketball

(4-19 Overall, 1-11 in the Little East)

Head Coach Mike Kelley’s team is 4-19 overall and 1-11 in the Little East Conference. RIC went 0-2 this week, losing to Western Connecticut 77-29 on Feb. 5 and to Southern Maine 63-47 on Feb. 9.

Sophomore guard Angela Sarette (Putnam, CT) has played in 23 games, starting 13 of them. She is averaging 10.0 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game.

Sophomore forward Elizabeth Shields (Warwick, RI) has played in 23 games, starting all of them. She is averaging 8.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.9 blocks and 1.5 steals per game.

Sophomore guard Monyca Vickers (Mattapoisett, MA) has played in 17 games, starting seven of them. She is averaging 5.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.2 steals per game.

Sophomore guard Katie Hansen (Narragansett, RI) has played in 23 games, starting 22 of them. She is averaging 8.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

Senior forward Melanie Wolf (Gorham, NH) has played in 23 games, starting all of them. The co-captain is averaging 3.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.

Sophomore guard Tara Mekuto (Providence, RI) has played in 21 games, starting three of them. She is averaging 2.6 points and 2.0 rebounds per game.

Freshman guard Becca Bissonnette (Danielson, CT) has played in 23 games, starting all of them. She is averaging 6.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.

Sophomore guard Abby Ferri (Greene, RI) has played in 23 games, starting one of them. She is averaging 3.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

Junior guard Pamela Kelly (West Hartford, CT) has played in 22 games. The co-captain is averaging 1.4 points and 1.0 rebounds per game.

Junior guard Alicia Hersperger (Providence, RI) has played in 16 games. She is averaging 0.9 rebounds per game.

Freshman forward Elizabeth Valeika (Woonsocket, RI) has played in 12 games.

In upcoming action, RIC will host UMASS-Dartmouth on Tuesday, Feb. 12 and travel to Plymouth State on Saturday, Feb. 12 for its final game of the season.

Wrestling

(10-13 overall; 8-7 in the NECCWA; 2-3 in the Pilgrim League)

Head Coach Jay Jones’ Anchormen are 10-13 overall, 8-7 in the New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) and are 2-3 in the Pilgrim League. RIC is currently ranked 10^th in New England as a team.

RIC went 1-3 this week. The Anchormen lost to Coast Guard 32-12 and to Johnson and Wales 26-13 on Feb. 5. RIC picked up a win against Bridgewater State 24-22 on Feb. 9, but lost to Trinity later in the day 20-18.

Junior Mike Riley (Lowell, MA) is currently ranked number one in New England at 133 pounds. The co-captain is 35-4 with 156 points, 115 takedowns, ten reversals, 41 escapes, 19 near-falls and four wins by fall on the year. Riley is currently riding a 25-match winning streak. He has not lost since the championship match of the Scranton Invitational on Dec. 1.

Freshman Justin Deveau (North Attleboro, MA) is ranked third in New England. He is 27-13 at 197 pounds with 123 points, 31 takedowns, 12 reversals, 30 escapes, nine near-falls and seven wins by fall on the year.

Sophomore Luke Emmons (West Greenwich, RI) is 23-14 at 141 pounds with 104 points, 34 takedowns, 19 reversals, 26 escapes, ten near-falls and seven wins by fall on the year.

Freshman Amos Traystman (Montville, CT) is 10-11 at 125 pounds with 48 points, 11 takedowns, three reversals and 13 escapes on the year.

Sophomore Walter Borden (East Providence, RI) is 12-16 at 165 and 174 pounds with 64 points, 28 takedowns, ten reversals, 36 escapes, seven near-falls and six wins by fall on the year.

Sophomore Gerard D’Arezzo (Cranston, RI) is 6-19 at 184 and 285 pounds with 31 points, 11 takedowns, three reversal, 45 escapes, one near-fall and two wins by fall on the year.

Freshman Eddy German (Providence, RI) is 3-4 at 125 pounds with 12 points, five takedowns and nine escapes on the year.

Freshman Jordan Goor (Lowell, MA) is 10-20 at 285 pounds with 45 points, nine takedowns, five reversals, 19 escapes and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Matt Kelly (Carver, MA) is 5-8 at 141 and 149 pounds with 24 points, six takedowns, two reversals, 17 escapes, six near-falls and two wins by fall on the year.

Freshman Andre LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) is 2-7 at 184, 197 and 285 pounds with nine points, three takedowns, two reversals, 12 escapes, two near-falls and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Gerard LaBonte (Harrisville, RI) is 7-20 at 165 and 174 pounds with 28 points, 15 takedowns, 18 reversals, 47 escapes, eight near-falls and two wins by fall on the year.

Senior Chad Lampert (Georgetown, MA) is 11-15 at 141 and 149 pounds with 50 points, 33 takedowns, four reversals, 34 escapes, six near-falls and three wins by fall on the year.

Freshman Mike LoSasso (Riverside, RI) is 1-3 at 149 pounds with six points, four takedowns, two reversals, one escape, two near-falls and one win by fall on the year.

Junior Mike Penza (Cranston, RI) is 3-10 at 157 and 165 pounds with 18 points, one takedown, four reversals, 26 escapes, one near-fall and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Tim Robblee (Wakefield, MA) is 9-14 at 157 and 174 pounds with 36 points, 21 takedowns, seven reversals, 17 escapes, 11 near-falls and one win by fall on the year.

Freshman Mike Skaling (Greene, RI) is 3-17 at 157, 165 and 174 pounds with nine points, ten takedowns and 25 escapes on the year.

Freshman Mike Vieira (Narragansett, RI) is 4-11 at 125 and 133 pounds with 21 points, six takedowns, six reversals, nine escapes and two wins by fall on the year.

In upcoming action, the NECCWA Championships will be held at Springfield College on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 16-17.

Women’s Gymnastics

(0-7 Overall; 0-4 in the ECAC)

Head Coach Nicole Follett Pannone’s Anchorwomen are currently 0-7 overall and 0-4 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference.

RIC lost to ECAC opponent Springfield 185.250-177.100 and to Southern Connecticut 180.000-177.100 on Feb. 10.

Senior captain Kristen Oliver (Bristol, RI) broke her left foot at the Wilson Invitational on Jan. 26 and is out indefinitely. Oliver was averaging scores of 8.460 on vault, 6.913 on bars, 8.681 on beam, 8.835 on floor and 32.950 in the all-around.

Sophomore Nicki Turner (Salem, NH) is out indefinitely after tearing her left ACL over Christmas Break. Turner was averaging scores of 8.150 on vault, 6.925 on bars and 8.300 on floor.

Junior captain Shannon Hughey (Warwick, RI) is averaging scores of 8.721 on vault, 8.688 on bars, 8.482 on beam, 8.954 on floor and 34.843 in the all-around.

Sophomore Nikki Longo (Raynham, MA) is averaging scores of 8.675 on vault, 8.518 on bars, 8.968 on beam, 8.375 on floor and 34.518 in the all-around.

Sophomore Nicole Simone (Johnston, RI) is averaging scores of 8.238 on vault, 6.383 on bars, 7.954 on beam, 7.245 on floor and 31.825 in the all-around.

Freshman Caren Normandin (Fall River, MA) is averaging scores of 8.889 on vault, 8.404 on bars, 9.043 on beam, 8.818 on floor and 35.154 in the all-around.

Freshman Ashley O’Blenis (Bristol, RI) is averaging scores of 8.396 on vault, 7.789 on bars, 8.371 on beam, 8.839 on floor and 33.396 in the all-around.

Sophomore Michaela Hogan (Warwick, RI) is averaging scores of 8.330 on vault, 8.000 on bars, 7.400 on beam, 8.650 on floor and 33.400 in the all-around.

Freshmen Ashley Bard (North Smithfield, RI) and Lauren Brennan (Barrington, RI) have yet to see action for the Anchorwomen this season

In upcoming action, RIC will compete at the Ithaca Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 17.

Men’s Indoor Track & Field

Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s Anchormen competed at the Little East/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Sunday, Feb. 10. The team finished sixth (10 teams) with 33 points on the day.

Senior co-captain Chris Puleo (Barrington, RI) was named All-Alliance/Little East in the 400 meters, placing sixth with a time of 52.67 at the Alliance Championships.

Junior Mike Daniels (Warwick, RI) was named All-Alliance/Little East in the 600 meters, placing second with a time of 1:27.51 at the Alliance Championships.

Sophomore co-captain Tim Rudd (Warwick, RI) was named All-Alliance/Little East in both the 1,000 and 1,500 meters. Rudd placed first in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:34.43 and second in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:02.01 at the Alliance Championships.

Freshman Ruben Feliz (Providence, RI) was named All-Alliance/Little East in the 1,000 meters, placing sixth with a time of 2:44.76 at the Alliance Championships.

Freshman Joe Parenteau (Smithfield, RI) was named All-Alliance/Little East in the 800 meters, placing sixth with a time of 2:06.01 at the Alliance Championships.

In upcoming action, the New England Division III Championships will be held on Feb. 15-16.

Women’s Indoor Track & Field

Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s Anchorwomen competed at the Little East/MASCAC Alliance Championships on Sunday, Feb. 10. The team finished sixth (ten teams) with 42 points on the day.

Senior Joyelle Galli (Exeter-West Greenwich) was named All-Alliance/Little East in both the long and triple jumps. Galli placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 15’10.75" and fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 33’03.75" at the Alliance Championships.

Sophomore Courtney Gardiner (Warwick, RI) was named All-Alliance/Little East in the triple jump, placing fifth with a leap of 31’06.00" at the Alliance Championships.

Freshman Jessica Leonard (Warwick, RI) was named All-Alliance/Little East in the weight throw, placing fourth with a distance of 40’03.75" at the Alliance Championships.

Freshman Rolanda Mangum (Providence, RI) was named All-Alliance/Little East in both the weight throw and the shot. Mangum placed first in the weight throw with a distance of 44’04.00" and fourth in the shot with a distance of 34’04.25" at the Alliance Championships.

Freshman Katherine McCalligett (Warwick, RI) was named All-Alliance/Little East in both the 200 and 400 meters. McCalligett placed second in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.73 and third in the 200 meters with a time of 27.25 at the Alliance Championships.

In upcoming action, the New England Division III Championships will be held on Feb. 15-16.
