Rhode Island College Names
John Martellino
Interim Men’s Tennis Coach |
|

|
Providence, RI—John
Martellino has been hired as the
interim head men’s tennis coach at Rhode Island College. He replaces
Dick Ernst who stepped down last week after 12 years at the
helm. |
|
Martellino comes to RIC
after being an assistant men’s tennis coach at Wheaton College last
spring, helping guide the team to a second place finish at the NEWMAC
Tournament |
|
He served as head girls’
tennis coach at Rogers High School from 1992-94. He led the Vikings to
two state championships and a division championship during his tenure.
The United States Professional Tennis Association named him New
England Coach of the Year in 1994. Martellino spent 1999 as the head
boys’ varsity tennis coach at Middletown High School. |
|
Martellino has been
involved with teaching and coaching tennis for over 25 years and has
earned the teaching rating of Professional 1, the highest rating given
by the USPTA. |
|
He earned a bachelor’s
degree in English from Roger Williams University in 1972. In addition
to his coaching duties, Martellino is the head pro at Nonquitt in
South Dartmouth, Massachusetts. |
|
He resides in Middletown,
Rhode Island with his wife Jane and their two children: David (16) and
Laura (14). |
|
The Anchormen begin their
season on Friday Mar. 22 when they travel to the University of Rhode
Island to take on the Rams. |
