2001-02 Season Summary |
|
Providence, RI--The
Rhode Island College women’s indoor track and field team, led by
first-year Head Coach Kevin Jackson and his assistants Matt
Hird and Liz Legault, closed out the 2001-02 season at the
2002 Division III Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC)
Championships, hosted by Tufts University on Mar. 2. The Anchorwomen
finished tied for 38th place with 5.0 points. The
Anchorwomen had two competitors take part in the Championships. |

The Anchorwomen tied for 19th
place with 7.0 points at the 2002 Division III New England Indoor
Championships, hosted by the University of Southern Maine, on Feb. 16. |
|
RIC placed sixth (ten
teams) with 42.0 points at the 2002 Little East/MASCAC Alliance
Championships, held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury,
Massachusetts, on Feb. 10. The Anchorwomen placed fourth (five teams)
in the Little East Conference on the day. |

Senior co-captain Joyelle
Galli (Exeter-West Greenwich, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East
honors in the long jump and triple jump, placing fourth in both events
with season-high distances of 15’10.75" and 33’03.75"
respectively. Her leap in the triple jump was a new RIC record. |
|
As a junior in 2000-01,
Galli earned All-Alliance/Little East honors as part of the 4 x 200
meter relay team, which placed third with a time of 1:55.57 at the
Alliance Championships. Galli also earned All-Alliance honors in the
long jump, placing second with a season-best leap of 4.79 meters, and
in the triple jump, placing fourth with a season-high distance of
10.00 meters. |

As a sophomore in 1999-00,
she was part of RIC’s Little East Conference Champion indoor track
and field squad. Galli earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in both
the long and triple jumps at the Alliance Championships. She placed
first overall in the triple jump at 33’05.00" and was third in
the long jump at 15’06.00". |

Galli is an early childhood
education major and a 1998 graduate of Exeter-West Greenwich High
School. |

Junior Leslie Eastwood
(East Providence, RI) placed tenth in the 800 meters at the Brown
Invitational on Dec. 1 with a season-best time of 2:41.00. |
|
Junior Jackie Horlbogen
(Coventry, RI) recorded a season-best time of 28.26 in the 200
meters at the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 8. |
|
Sophomore Dapheney Jean-Baptiste
(Stamford, CT) recorded a season-best time of 28.47 in the 200
meters at the Brown Invitational on Dec. 1. |

Sophomore co-captain Joanne
Pora (Attleboro, MA) placed sixth in the weight throw at the
Brandeis Invitational on Jan. 19 with a season-best distance of 37’05.25".
She also recorded a season-best throw of 28’11.75" in the shot
at the same meet. |

Freshman Shari Fenton
(West Warwick, RI) placed fourth in the shot with a season-best
distance of 31’01.00" and placed sixth in the weight throw with
a mark of 33’10.50" at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan.
26. She recorded a season-best throw of 34’11.25" at the
Alliance Championships on Feb. 10. |

Freshman Courtney
Gardiner (Warwick, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in
the triple jump, placing fifth overall with a season-best leap of 31’06.00".
She also ran a season-best time of 29.96 in the 200 meters at the
Alliance Championships. Gardiner placed ninth with a season-best time
of 10.19 in the 55 meter hurdles at the Wheaton Invitational. She also
earned a fifth place finish in that event at the Southern Maine
Invitational with a time of 10.75 on Jan. 26. |

Freshman Jessica Leonard
(Warwick, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the weight
throw, placing fourth with a distance of 40’03.75". Leonard
placed second in the weight throw with a season-best mark of 41’04.50"
at the Wheaton Invitational on Feb. 2. She recorded a season-best
distance of 27’11.00" in the shot at the Southern Maine
Invitational on Jan. 26. |

Freshman Rolanda Mangum
(Providence, RI) finished the 2001-02 season ranked 15th
nationally in Division III in the weight throw event. She was the
highest ranked freshman in the country for that event. She narrowly
missed qualifying for the NCAA Div. III National Championships (the
top 12 were selected). Mangum earned All-ECAC honors in the weight
throw, placing fourth with a season-best throw of 49’10.00" and
a new RIC record for that event. |

Mangum earned All-New
England honors after placing fourth in the weight throw with a mark of
48’07.25" at that meet. She earned All-Alliance/Little East
honors in the weight throw and the shot. She placed first in the
weight throw with a distance of 44’04.00" and fourth in the
shot with a season-best throw of 34’04.25". Mangum placed
second in the weight throw with a distance of 44’09.00" and
third in the shot with a distance of 31’03.25" at the Southern
Maine Invitational on Jan. 26. |

Freshman Katherine
McCalligett (Warwick, RI) earned All-New England honors, placing
seventh in the 400 meters with a school record time of 1:00.37. She
also placed ninth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.40 at that
same meet. |
|
McCalligett earned
All-Alliance/Little East honors in both the 200 and 400 meters. She
placed second in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.73 and third in
the 200 meters with a season-best time of 27.25. |
|
McCalligett placed first in
both the 200 and 400 meters at the Southern Maine Invitational on Jan.
26 with times of 27.59 and 1:01.34 respectively. |
