Jay Grenier enters his
eighth season as the
head baseball coach at Rhode Island College. He owns a career record
of
337-213-1 as a collegiate head baseball
coach.
Under his guidance, Rhode Island College posted a 21-14
overall record and an 8-6 (third place tie) in the Little East
Conference in 2007.The Anchormen's 21 wins tied the 2006 edition's
mark for the most wins in a season since the 1979 squad won 24
games.
Grenier led the Anchormen to 21-20 overall record and an 8-6 (third
place tie) mark in the Little East Conference in 2006, despite
losing seven seniors from the NCAA Tournament squad in 2005. It was
the Anchormen's first winning season since 2003. RIC
also made its first Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New
England Baseball Championship appearance in 19 years. The Anchormen
won their first round contest vs. UMass Boston before the tournament
was halted due to inclement weather.
RIC concluded the 2005
season with a 19-21 overall record and a 7-7 (fourth place tie) mark
in the Little East Conference regular season.
RIC saw its season end
with a 2-0 loss to Pittsburgh-Bradford at the 2005 NCAA Div. III
Regional Tournament on May 20. RIC, appearing in its first NCAA
Tournament in 25 years, fell in its first game of the
double-elimination tournament, 9-8 in ten innings, to top-seeded
Cortland State. The Anchormen earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament
by winning their first-ever LEC Championship. RIC, seeded fifth,
swept through the tournament with a 4-0 record defeating all of the
four higher seeds along the way.
RIC turned the corner in
2003, improving to 20-19 overall and 5-9 (sixth place) in the Little
East Conference from 10-25 overall and 2-12 (seventh place) in 2002.
The Anchormen were 6-22 overall and 2-12 (eighth place) in the
Little East Conference in his first season at the helm in 2001.
Grenier, who hails from North Smithfield,
was previously the Head Baseball Coach at the Community College of
Rhode Island, a position he held since 1993. During his tenure as
the Head Coach at CCRI, the Knights were a consistent regional
power. He was named the NJCAA Coach of the Year in both 1994 and
1996. He was the Louisville Slugger Region 21 Coach of the
Year in 1993, 1994 and 1996.
Prior to taking the job at CCRI, Grenier
was an assistant coach for the Knights from 1985-93.
He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Rhode
Island College in 1981, a position he held through the 1985 season.
He has also served the Head Coach of the Rhode Island Reds, a New
England Collegiate Baseball League team. Grenier has also worked as
a hitting coach for the Chatham A’s of the Cape Cod Baseball
League and as an envoy coach to Jamaica with Major League Baseball
International.
In addition to his coaching duties, Grenier
is a middle school language arts teacher for the city of Central
Falls. He is also the owner and director of the Rhode Island
Baseball Academy located in North Smithfield.
He resides in North
Smithfield with his wife Debbie and their children Chelsey and
Garrett. |
