Rhode Island
College’s Women’s Tennis Captures Little East Conference
Championship |

Providence, RI— The
Rhode Island College women’s tennis team captured the 2003
Little East Conference Championship, hosted by Plymouth State
College on Oct. 17-18. Head Coach Kelly Lange’s team won
the tournament with 20.0 points. Southern Maine finished second
(16.0), Western Connecticut third (9.0), Plymouth State fourth
(8.0), UMass-Dartmouth fifth (6.5) and UMass-Boston sixth (3.0). |

It is the fifth Little
East title for the Anchorwomen, the first for Lange, and RIC’s
third in the last five seasons. RIC has captured LEC titles in 1994,
1995, 1999, 2001 and 2003. |

Senior Carminda Rocha
(East Providence, RI) was the Little East Conference Champion at
number two singles. Rocha received a bye in the first round, def. Stacy
Slater from Southern Maine (6-2, 6-1) in the semi-finals and
beat Katie Olsen from Plymouth State (6-3, 7-5) in the finals
to claim the title. Rocha lost in the finals match of the number two
doubles flight as well. |

This is the fifth Little
East title Rocha has won during her illustrious collegiate career.
She was the LEC Champion at number four singles as a freshman and
sophomore (1999 & 2000) and at number two singles as a junior
(2001). Rocha also shared the LEC Champion title at number two
doubles as a sophomore (2000). |

|
She owns a 53-10-1 (.836)
career singles mark and a 44-16 (.733) career doubles mark for 75.5
career points. Rocha is RIC’s all-time leader in career singles
wins and points. She owns an 11-1 (.917) mark at number two singles
and an 8-3 (.727) record at number two doubles this season. |

Senior Kristin
Mandsager (Portsmouth, RI) was the Little East Conference
Champion at number six singles. Mandsager received a bye in the
first round, defeated Megan Sowers from Plymouth State (6-1,
6-2) in the semi-finals and Amelia Rice from Southern Maine
(6-1, 6-2) in the finals to claim the title. This is Mandsager’s
first career LEC title. Mandsager also lost in the semi-finals of
the number three doubles flight. She is 9-1 (.900) at number six
singles and 7-2 (.778) at number three doubles for 12.5 points on
the season. |

Freshman Caitlin Morin
(Westerly, RI) was the Little East Conference Champion at number
five singles. She received a bye in the first round, defeated Sarah
Charwick from UMass-Dartmouth (6-3, 6-2) in the semi-finals
and Catie McCarthy from Southern Maine (6-1, 6-0) in the
finals to claim the title. Morin also lost in the semi-finals of the
number three doubles flight. She is 11-4 (.733) at number five
singles and 6-6 (.500) at number three doubles for 14.0 points on
the season. |

Sophomore co-captain Liz
Barrette (North Providence, RI) lost to Chelsea Gray from
Southern Maine (3-6, 6-3, 2-6) in the finals match of the number one
singles flight. She also lost in the finals match of the number one
doubles flight. Barrette is 11-5 (.688) at number one singles and
12-4 (.750) number one doubles for a team-high 17.0 points on the
season. |

Junior co-captain Meghan
Mooney (North Scituate, RI) lost to Morgan Alley from
Southern Maine (4-6, 6-2, 1-6) in the finals match of the number
three singles flight. She also lost in the finals match of the
number one doubles flight. Mooney is 11-5 (.688) at number three
singles and 11-4 (.733) at number one doubles for 16.5 points on the
season. |

Freshman Tara Marchant
(North Scituate, RI) lost to Rachel Xavier from Plymouth
State (5-7, 0-6) in the finals match of the number four singles
flight. She also lost in the finals match of the number two doubles
flight. Marchant is 7-10 (.412) at number four singles and 7-6
(.538) at number two doubles for 10.5 points on the season. |

The Anchorwomen will
close out the 2003 season at home on Monday, Oct. 20 when they host
Roger Williams University at 4:30 p.m. |
