Kelly’s Heroics Lift Anchormen To
Victory |
|
Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College junior catcher Eric Kelly (Fall River, MA) laced
a single to right field scoring junior left fielder
Chris Higgins (Swansea, MA) in the bottom of the ninth to defeat
Worcester State College, 8-7, in collegiate baseball action on
Thursday, March. With the victory, the Anchormen improve to 7-4 while
the Lancers fall to 5-5. |
|
|
|
The Anchormen jumped on the Lancers
early, grabbing a 7-2 lead thanks to three home runs, including a
three-run blast from Higgins. Also hitting long balls for RIC early in
the contest were sophomore shortstop Ray De La Cruz (Pawtucket,
RI) and sophomore right
fielder Mike Naylor (Warwick,
RI). |
|
|
|
Worcester State rallied in the fifth
and sixth innings behind a three-run double off the bat of Zac
Attaway (Hudson, MA)
which brought the Lancers within one run. Attaway then scored to tie
the game, 7-7, when Kyle Oksanish (South
Grafton, MA)
reached on an error. Both team’s relief pitching
then
shut down the offense as the score was
tied heading to the bottom of the ninth. |

|
Worcester State reliever Bear Dunn
(Charlton, MA),
who was the starting first basemen, got the first two RIC batters of
the inning out but got into trouble when he put the next two men on
base via a walk and hit by pitch. Kelly then came to the plate to
deliver the heroics. |
|
|
|
On the mound for the Anchormen, junior
Brandon White (Foster, RI) got the start and went 5.0 innings,
giving up seven runs. Sophomore Bruce Taraska (Exeter,
RI) and junior Jim
Milano (Johnston, RI)
teamed up for four scoreless innings of relieve as Milano got his
first victory of the season to improve his record to 1-1. For the
Lancers, starter Cean Oksanish (South
Grafton) went 3.0 innings
before giving way to Luke Perec (Worcester,
MA) who pitched 5.0
scoreless innings. Dunn receives the loss and falls to 0-2 on the
season. |
