COLONIALS DEFEAT ANCHORWOMEN, 57-54

                Providence, RI—The Rhode Island College Anchorwomen were defeated by the Western Connecticut State University Colonials, 57-54, in collegiate basketball action on Jan. 27 at The Murray Center.

RIC used a 9-0 run early in the first half to extend its lead to 11-6. Sophomore forward Liz Barrette (North Providence, RI) came off the bench to score four points and two assists in seven minutes of action. The Colonials came back with a 9-3 run of their own to take a one point lead, 19-18. The first half came to a close with WCSU up by just two points, 29-27.

Western Connecticut began the second half on an 8-0 run to extend its lead to 38-27. RIC battled back and took a one point lead, 46-45, with 9:10 left on a three-pointer by freshman guard Lisa Ranzoni (Lee, MA) but went cold from the field going without a field goal for more than eight minutes. In that span, the Colonials built a 55-49 lead. The Anchorwomen had a chance to tie with a last second desperation shot but senior guard Abby Ferri’s (Coventry, RI) heave from half-court missed.

Leading the way for the Colonials was freshman forward Mallory Stevens (Seymour, CT) who had a game-high 17 points and senior forward Christin Morgatto (Seymour, CT) who had a double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds. For the Anchorwomen, Ranzoni poured in a team-high 16 points with all five field goals being from three-point land. The victory improves Western Connecticut to 7-10 overall and 3-5 in the LEC. The Anchorwomen fall to 10-7 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

In upcoming action, RIC will host Newbury College on Thursday, Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. Western Connecticut will play at Western New England on Thursday. Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m.
