AMHERST DEFEATS RIC, 3-1
|

Providence, RI—Amherst
College, ranked 21st in the nation, notched its eighth win
of the season with a, 3-1, victory over Rhode Island College in
collegiate women’s soccer action on Tuesday afternoon. The Lord Jeffs
improved to 8-1-4, while the loss dropped the Anchorwomen to 9-9. |

Senior Ashley Harmeling (North
Reading, MA) scored
twice to pace Amherst’s offense. She scored in the 12th
minute, converting a pass from senior Adrienne Showler (Ottawa,
Ontario). Showler
added a goal of her own three minutes into the second half, scoring in
the 48th minute. Harmeling headed in her second tally of
the day on a corner kick from freshman Heather Nowak (New
Haven, CT) in the
56th minute. |

RIC spoiled Amherst’s shutout
bid in the 88th minute when senior Elena Sanborn (North
Scituate, RI)
lofted a shot from 30 yards out that went over the head of AC junior
goalkeeper Emily Durwood (Kansas
City, KS). |

Sophomore Piper Crowell (San
Rafael, CA) started
in net for Amherst and made four saves in 64 minutes of work. Durwood
relieved Crowell for the final 26 minutes and made two saves. RIC
senior goalkeeper Melissa Carpentier (Woonsocket,
RI) made five saves
in a losing effort. |

In upcoming action, the
Anchorwomen will close out the regular season at Plymouth State on
Saturday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. Amherst will host Williams on Saturday,
Oct. 30 at 11 a.m. |
