EASTERN CONNECTICUT DOWNS RIC, 3-2;
ADVANCES TO LEC FINALS
|
Providence, RI—Despite
a furious comeback by Rhode Island College, Eastern Connecticut State
University held on to win, 3-2, and advance to the Championship Match
of the 2004 Little East Conference Women’s Volleyball Tournament. The
Warriors will face third-seeded Plymouth State University, which
defeated second-seeded Western Connecticut State University, 3-2, in
the other semi-final match earlier in the evening, tomorrow afternoon
at 1 p.m. in The Murray Center at RIC.

All five
games were close, featuring many lead changes. The Warriors took game
one, 30-25, and were narrowly defeated in game two, 30-28. ECSU came
back in game three, 30-26, before RIC stormed back to win game four,
31-29. The Anchorwomen continued their torrid comeback and were up 6-3
before ECSU Head Women’s Volleyball Coach Jolie Ward called a
timeout. The Warriors gained a side out on the next possession and ran
off seven straight points to go up 11-6. RIC came back to even the
game up 13-13 before the Warriors
went on to win, 17-15. |

Three
players on the ECSU roster reached double figures in kills led by
senior Jessica Leifert (Winsted,
CT)
who had 17. Freshman Emma Sousa (Coventry,
CT)
had 16 kills and senior Amanda Jassen (Winsted,
CT)
posted 11. Leifert had 17 digs and seven aces to help lead the
Warriors to victory. Jassen chipped in with 16 digs, three blocks and
a service ace. Freshman Meghan Doyle (Hewlett,
NY)
posted a team-high 31 assists. |

Rhode
Island College was led by sophomore Kari Geisler (Deerfield,
NH)
who had a match-high 20 kills. Junior Kristy Nix (East
Setauket,
NY)
had 14 kills, 15 digs and four blocks. Freshman Jeanne Rosa (Milford,
CT)
had 45 assists and ten digs. |
