2004 Rhode Island College
Women’s Soccer Season Summary
|
(10-9 Overall; 2-5 in the Little
East Conference)
|
|
Providence, RI--Head
Coach Ryan Angel’s (Career Record: 28-46-3) team
finished the 2004 season with a 10-9 overall record and a 2-5 (seventh
place) mark in the Little East Conference. The team’s 10 victories
were the most in the program’s ten-year history. RIC also posted only
its second winning season ever. The 1999 club’s 9-8-1 effort was the
only other time RIC women’s soccer finished the season above .500. As
a team, RIC set new program records for assists (28) in a season and
equaled the most shutouts (seven) in a season. |

|
Senior
goalkeeper Melissa Carpentier (Woonsocket, RI) leaves RIC
having played in 68 career games, starting 65 of them. She recorded
402 career saves, and logged a 1.36 career goals against average and a
.815 career save percentage. Carpentier is RIC’s all-time leader with
18 career shutouts, as well as goals against average. She is second
all-time in career saves. |

As a senior
in 2004, Carpentier played in 15 games, starting 13 of them. She made
42 saves, recorded a .689 save percentage, a 1.43 goals against
average and three shutouts. |
|
|
|
As a junior
in 2003, she played in 17 games, starting 16 of them. She made 78
saves, recorded a .780 save percentage and a 1.34 goals against
average. Carpentier recorded three shutouts on the season. |
|
|
|
As a
sophomore in 2002, Carpentier played in 19 games, starting all of
them. She totaled 137 saves, a 1.21 goals against average and a .851
save percentage. Her 1.21 GAA in 2002 is RIC record for a single
season. |
|
|
|
As a
freshman in 2001, she played in 17 games, starting all of them. She
owned a 1.51 goals-against average, a .848 save percentage and made
145 saves with six shutouts on the season. |
|
|
|
She is an
elementary education major and a 2001 graduate of Woonsocket High
School. |
|
|
|
Senior
defender Courtney Gardiner (Warwick, RI) closes out her career
at RIC having played in 58 games, starting 39 of them, in her career. |
|
|
|
As a senior
in 2004, she played in nine games, starting three of them. |
|
|
|
As a junior
in 2003, Gardiner played in 13 games this season, starting five of
them. |
|
|
|
As a
sophomore in 2002, she played in 19 games, starting all of them. |
|
|
|
As a
freshman in 2002, she played in 17 games, starting 12 of them. |
|
|
|
Gardiner is
a physical education/health major and a 2001 graduate of Pilgrim High
School. |
|
|
|
Senior
midfielder Elena Sanborn (North Scituate, RI) leaves RIC having
played in 69 career games, starting 66 of them. She had seven goals
and 14 assists for 28 career points. Sanborn is third all-time at RIC
in career assists and ranks ninth in career points. |
|
|
|
As a senior
in 2004, she played in 15 games, starting 12 of them. She had two
goals and six assists for ten points. Her six helpers were the seventh
most in a single season in RIC history. |
|
|
|
As a junior
in 2003, Sanborn was named Second Team All-Little East Conference. She
played in 20 games, starting all of them. She had three goals and
three assists for nine points on the season. |
|
|
|
As a
sophomore in 2002, she played in 17 games, starting all of them.
Sanborn had one goal and four assists for six points. She was tied for
second on the team in assists. |
|
|
|
As a
freshman in 2001, Sanborn played in 17 games, starting all of them.
She had one goal and an assist for three points. |
|
|
|
She is an
elementary education major with a concentration in special education
and a 2001 graduate of Scituate High School. |
|
|
|
Senior
forward Lauren Tomasso (Cranston, RI) leaves RIC having played
in 55 career games, starting 48 of them. She had eight goals and two
assists for 18 career points. Tomasso ranks 13th all-time
in goals and 14th all-time in points at RIC. |

|
|
As a senior
in 2004, Tomasso played in 17 games, starting 14 of them. She had one
assist for one point. |
|
|
|
As a junior
in 2003, she played in 20 games, starting 19 of them. She had three
goals and one assist for seven points on the season. |
|
|
|
As a
sophomore in 2002, Tomasso played in 18 games, starting 15 of them.
Tomasso had five goals for ten points on the season. Tomasso led the
team in goals and was second in points. |
|
|
|
As a
freshman in 2001, Tomasso played in five games while at Sacred Heart
University. |
|
|
|
Tomasso is
a secondary education major with a concentration in English and a 2001
graduate of Cranston High School West. |
|
|
|
Junior
defender Katie Benevides (North Dighton, MA) played in 19
games, starting 16 of them. |
|
|
|
Junior
goalkeeper Alex Rothemich (Scituate, RI) played in seven games,
starting four of them. She had a 2-2 record, 17 saves and two shutouts
with a .586 save percentage and a 2.01 goals against average. |
|
|
|
Sophomore
midfielder Caitlin Gavin (Portsmouth, RI) played in 18 games,
starting 15 of them. She had five goals and one assist for 11 points. |
|
|
|
Sophomore
forward Erika Haaland (North Dartmouth, MA) played in 17 games,
starting ten of them. She had four goals and one assist for nine
points. |
|
|
|
Freshman
defender Mallary Bileau (Woonsocket, RI) played in 18 games,
starting 17 of them. |
|
|
|
Freshman
midfielder Michaela Bileau (Woonsocket, RI) played in 19 games,
starting 12 of them. She had four goals and two assists for ten
points. |

|
|
Freshman
forward Gina Calenda (Bristol, RI) was named Second Team
All-Little East Conference. She played in 19 games, starting ten of
them. She had three assists, and led the team in goals with 11, and
points, with 25. Her 11 goals and 25 points are new program records
for a freshman, surpassing Alexis Bouchard’s 2001 rookie
campaign of ten goals and 23 points. Calenda was named the Little
East Conference Rookie of the Week once on the season. Calenda is
currently 12th all-time at RIC in points and tied for
eighth in career goals. |

Freshman
midfielder Jessica Cardinal (Harrisville, RI) played in 14
games, starting three of them. She had four goals and one assist for
nine points. Cardinal was named the Little East Conference’s Rookie of
the Week once on the season. |
|
|
|
Freshman
defender Jackie Coleman (North Plymouth, MA) played in 19
games, starting 16 of them. She had one goal and one assist for three
points. |
|
|
|
Freshman
defender Kerry Donahue (Rehoboth, MA) played in 16 games,
starting 12 of them. |
|

forward Sarah Hamilton (Cromwell, CT) played in 12 games,
starting two of them. She had one goal for two points. |
