ANCHORMEN & BEACONS SPLIT TWO
Rhode
Island College Shakes Off Game One Loss To Win Game Two, 11-4 |
Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College and UMass Boston split a doubleheader in a battle of
two Little East Conference rivals. UMB held off a RIC rally in the
bottom of the ninth to win the first game, 7-6. The Anchormen stormed
back in game two, defeating the Beacons, 11-4. RIC is now 10-10
overall and 3-3 in the Little East, while UMB is 12-11 overall and 2-3
in the LEC.

In game one,
the Beacons scored four runs off of RIC senior starting pitcher
James Milano (Johnston, RI)
to take a four-run lead through three innings. Milano was chased from
the game in the sixth, giving up six runs, of which only three were
earned, to go along with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. UMB
sophomore left fielder
David Waters (Millis, MA)
was an offensive force, going 2-for-2 with three runs scored, three
RBI, a home run, one walk and three stolen bases. RIC trailed, 7-4,
heading into the bottom of the ninth, and promptly plated two runs.
With two away, senior pinch hitter
Chris Higgins (Swansea, MA)
grounded out with the tying run on third as the Beacons escaped with
the win. UMB sophomore starting pitcher
Evan Tardugno (Methuen, MA)
hurled a complete game, striking out 11 and allowing four earned runs
to even his record at 2-2. Milano took the loss, falling to 1-3 on the
season.

Higgins paced
RIC’s offense in game two, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs
scored and one double. In addition, he clouted his second homer of the
season to lead off the fifth inning. RIC put the game out of reach
with a six-run sixth inning. Freshman outfielder
Robert Doyon (Douglas, MA)
went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and one RBI. Freshman pitcher
Eric Thibault (Somerset,
MA)
hurled a complete game with three strikeouts to even his record at
2-2. UMB sophomore starting pitcher
Pat Donovan (Lowell, MA)
took the loss, falling to 1-4 on the season. Donovan went 1-for-4 with
a solo home run and two RBI at the plate.

In upcoming
action, RIC will host LEC rival Keene State for a doubleheader
tomorrow afternoon beginning at noon.
