ANCHORMEN WIN FIRST-EVER LITTLE EAST TITLE
Earn First NCAA Tournament Bid in 25 Years
|
|
Willimantic, CT—Fifth-seeded
Rhode Island College defeated fourth-seeded Western Connecticut, 6-3,
in the Championship Game of the 2005 Little East Conference Baseball
Tournament. It is the first-ever Little East title for the Anchormen,
who will head to the NCAA Div. III Baseball Tournament for the first
time in 25 years (1980). |
|
|
|
RIC freshman
right fielder Robert Doyon
(Douglas, MA)
went 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs scored and a double to pace the
offense. Doyon hit a two-RBI single in the bottom of the first to give
the Anchormen a lead, which they would never relinquish. He added an
insurance RBI double as part of a three-run fifth. Doyon was named the
2005 Little East Conference Baseball Tournament’s Most Outstanding
Player, going 7-for-17 (.412) with three runs scored, six RBI and two
doubles. |
|
|
|
“I’ve been in
a slump lately,” Doyon said after the game, “but I guess I picked a
good time to come out of it. As a team we all gelled together at the
right time and it’s great to win a championship.” |
|
|
|
Senior
starting pitcher James
Milano (Johnston, RI)
picked up his
second win (2-5) of the season, hurling 5.2 innings, allowing three
runs with three strikeouts. Freshman reliever
Eric Fama (Wappingors Falls, NY)
came on in relief for the final 3.1 innings. Fama blanked the
Colonials, allowing one hit to go along with a strikeout to earn his
second save of the year. |
|
|
|
Freshman
first baseman Jim Connell
(Smithfield, RI),
senior
center fielder Glenn
Dusablon (North Smithfield, RI)
and senior
third baseman Chris
Smaldone (Johnston, RI)
all had RBI in the win. |
|
|
|
The Anchormen
were a perfect 4-0 at the tourney. RIC opened with a 8-3 win over
second-seeded Keene State on Wednesday, May 11, then defeated
third-seeded Southern Maine, 7-4, on Thursday, May 12 and knocked off
top-seed and tournament host Eastern Connecticut, 6-3, on Friday, May
13. |
|
|
|
“We are very
excited to win the Little East Tournament for the first time,” RIC
Head Coach Jay Grenier said. “I am very happy for our seniors. They
have been through a lot over the last four years. They are great
people who played great baseball the past four days.” |
