RIC, down
1-0, scored seven runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 7-1
lead and chased Cortland State senior starting pitcher
Mike Burnett (Westfield, NY).
The inning was highlighted by a bases loaded double by freshman first
baseman Jim Connell
(Smithfield, RI)
which cleared
the bases. The inning began with a single and was followed by two Red
Dragon errors. Senior left fielder
Chris Higgins (Swansea, MA)
then walked,
and senior designated hitter
Matt Brannon (Cranston, MA)
followed with
an RBI single before the Connell double. Junior starting pitcher
Wade Briggs (Woonsocket, RI)
was
controlling the Cortland State hitters and finished the day throwing
7.2 innings, giving up five hits and three earned runs, while striking
out five. Briggs and RIC appeared in control before Cortland State
bats woke up.

Cortland
State scored once in the bottom of the seventh and added two more in
the eighth inning. RIC added an insurance run in their half of the
ninth inning, but gave up four runs in the bottom of the ninth to send
the game to extra innings. Freshman reliever
Eric Fama (Wappingors Falls, NY)
gave way to Brannon with one out in the ninth. Red Dragon senior
second basemen Steve Newman
(Henrietta, NY)
came up with runners on first and second and reached on an infield
single to third base. On the play, senior third baseman
Chris Smaldone (Johnston, RI)
missed his attempt to tag out the runner going to third and
then made an errant throw to first base, which allowed both runs to
score and advanced Newman to third.
Newman
then scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by sophomore first
baseman Travis Robinson
(Ilion, NY).
RIC was unable to score in the top of the tenth. Cortland State got a
run across in the bottom of the tenth on a sacrifice fly by junior
second baseman Rick
Piovesan (East Norwich, NY).
The runner scoring on the play was junior designated hitter
Adam Sidebottom (Lockport, NY)
who
led the inning off with a triple.

Brannon took
the loss, dropping his record to 2-3 on the season. Red Dragon
sophomore pitcher Justin
Mattes (Queensbury, NY)
entered the
game in the ninth inning, throwing the final 1.2 innings to pick up
his third (3-1) win of the season.
