Rhode Island College Men’s Soccer Update #4

(5-4-1 Overall; 3-0 in the Little East Conference)

Providence, RI--Head Coach John Mello’s team is 5-4-1 overall and 3-0 in the Little East Conference. The Anchormen are tied for first place in the Little East with Keene State.

Anchormen Notables

• RIC saw a three-game winning streak come to end on Tuesday, Sept. 27 with a 3-0 loss to Tufts. Sophomore goalkeeper Jadon Neves (Warren, RI) made three saves in a losing effort.

• The Anchormen bounced back with a strong game against the seventh-ranked team in New England, Roger Williams, at home on Thursday, Sept. 29. In a hard-fought, physical contest, RIC and RWU battled to a 0-0 tie in double overtime. The Anchormen outshot the Hawks, 16-5, in the game. Neves notched his second shutout of the season, making one save in the contest.

• RIC downed Little East Conference opponent UMass Dartmouth, 2-0, at home in front of a spirited Homecoming crowd on Saturday, Oct. 1. Sophomore midfielder Tyrell Burgess (Smiths, Bermuda) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on a direct kick in the 45^th minute. Senior forward Kyle Teixeira (Warren, RI) scored the insurance goal in the 62^nd minute, chipping in a pass from junior midfielder Holman Giraldo (Pawtucket, RI). Sophomore goalkeeper Sean Gonsalves (Somerset, MA) made two saves to improve his record to 3-0 on the season. All of his wins have come by way of shutout.

• Rhode Island College President John Nazarian presented Teixeira with the ball he used to break Domenico Petrarca’s ’77 all-time career points record prior to the UMass Dartmouth game. Teixeira broke the record on Sept. 10 at M.I.T. He currently has 74 goals, 20 assists for 168 career points.
