Little East Conference Playoffs - First Round Game |
|
|
|
GORHAM, Maine
-- Senior midfielder Dianna Thibaudeau (Sanford, Maine)
scored the only goal of the match in the 20th minute to give the
University of Southern Maine Huskies a hard-fought, 1-0 victory over
the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen Tuesday afternoon in a first
round Little East Conference playoff game. |
|
The Huskies,
seeded fourth in the tournament, advance to play top-seeded Eastern
Connecticut State University in the semifinals on Friday. USM, which
had dropped its last three regular season games, improve to 11-6-1
overall. Rhode Island College, the fifth seed, finishes the season at
10-8. |
|
Senior forward Liz
Brunton (Birch Harbor, Maine) set up the winning goal with
some hard work in the right wing corner before crossing the ball into
the box where Thibaudeau got her head on it to direct past the
Anchorwomen's freshman goalkeeper, Krissie Pyzynski
(Bristol, Conn.). The goal was Thibaudeau's fourth of the season
and second game winner. |
|
USM freshman
keeper Mindy Morneault (Eagle
Lake, Maine)
preserved the lead making five saves. Morneualt received strong
defensive efforts from senior Stacy LeBlanc (Standish,
Maine),
junior Jenna Wasylak (Dunstable,
Mass.) and
sophomore Samantha Rennie (Hudson,
N.H.). |
|
Southern Maine
nearly had a second goal in the 61st minute, but junior forward
Julia Cyr's (Standish,
Maine)
curving free kick from the left side just outside the penalty area
bounced off the far post. |
|
Rhode Island
College had a 7-4 advantage in shots and the only two corner kicks in
the match. Pyzynski would be credited with one save. |
