Four-Run Ninth Wins It For Seahawks
|
Providence, RI—Salve
Regina University scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to
lift the Seahawks past Rhode Island College, 9-5, in collegiate
baseball action. The Anchormen fall to 4-8 on the season, while Salve
Regina improves to 10-4.
|
|
Salve Regina junior
Davin Sirpenski (Voluntown, CT),
who started the game as the designated hitter, came on in relief
during the eighth inning and got the Seahawks out of a bases loaded
jam. Sirpenski came up to bat with two outs and a runner of second
base in the top of the ninth and singled in the go-ahead run. The
Seahawks scored three more times in the frame and shut RIC down in the
bottom of the ninth to pick up the victory. Sirpenski (1-0) got the
win.

|
The Seahawks had four players get multiple hits on the
afternoon, led by sophomore center fielder
Brendan Haire
(Waterford, CT)
who went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman right
fielder Justin Collett
(South Portland, ME)
went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

|
The Seahawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the
third, but RIC evened the game up with four of its own in the bottom
of the frame. Sophomore first baseman
Jim Connell’s (Smithfield, RI)
RBI fielder’s choice in the fourth gave RIC the lead
until SRU tied it up in the seventh inning.
|
|
RIC freshman pitcher
Kyle Jones (Middleboro, MA)
took the loss (0-2) in relief. Freshman left fielder
Mike McDonnell (Peabody, MA)
homered in the game.
